Private land elk recommendations

Thought they had some "free range" elk in TX on ranches you could hunt?

Wasn't bashing I just remember a few years ago when I was down visiting relatives in Ft Davis, that some guy shot what would have been a world record bull but since it wasn't a native TX animal it wasn't recognized. They talked a lot about how the elk were free to go where ever with no fences.

It’s available but not exactly what I’m looking for. I am putting in for draws in different state but as a non res it’s going to be a while.

Lots of opportunities in both States, will depend on the type of hunt you are looking for and most importantly budget. Guided on unguided?

Keep in mind in NM you don't necessarily need access to private land to have a great hunt, just need to draw the tag. If you don't draw there are certainly opportunities for landowner tags both unit wide and private land only. If you are going the guided route, I would find and outfitter that has access to landowner tags and enter the draw under his outfitter number which gives you better odds, and if you don't draw then you can purchase the tag from the outfitter. This guarantees that you will be hunting and you can plan accordingly.

I think it will depend on budget, goals, and expectations.

If looking for trophy elk and can wait on draw, then NM.

If looking for quantity of animals, OTC/landowner, then CO.

There are some trophy / landowner permit areas in CO.

Colorado, KB Outdoors has some good hunts. I hunted with them and they do a good job.

NM, Compass West is solid. I've hunted with them.

MT, MT Hunting Co has several options and is solid. Also Big Rack of MT and Rich Birdsell. All are draw, but have good hunts on private.

I dot know the ranch names, but Unit 85 Colorado has some huge animals on private land hunts just south of Stonewall.

I would be in to unguided if there were any good recommendations. Will probably be looking for guided. Not looking for monsters but a good opportunity at a bull is what I’m looking for. 8-10k range?

In Colorado I have hunted with buffalo creek ranch, buffalocreek.com twice, and killed two bulls and both were good hunts, you can pm for more details if interested
