I am trying to thin the herd of rifles in my safe and optics as well.

I have a good idea of where to get rough valuations of rifles, but no scopes.

The scope that triggered the post is a gloss Leupold VX-1 2-7x28 rimfire scope. The ones for sale on EBay are priced much higher than I expected $500+; however, I have no idea why. It is a great little scope for a lightweight rimfire rifle (I had it on a T Bolt).

Is there a reliable place to get values for used scopes.

On eBay you should search for “sold” items to get more realistic prices (it’s in the “show only” box on the left side. Still, some of the prices listed will be unusually high or low and should be thrown out of your decision. Sometimes the low or high prices are a negotiation behind the scene involving other items, “I’ll pay $xxx price for this if you sell the other for $xxx.” I’ve also had an auction abruptly stop with an unusually high sale price, which I’m sure is a friend of the seller who didn’t actually pay that amount. Other times the item is actually damaged or defective or damaged in shipping and the low price is what was actually paid, but was a negotiation and doesn’t reflect what the original intact item sold for.

Yes, there is that guy on eBay that takes real nice photos but the buy it now’s are insane. I guess it must work, he keeps going.

The advice to look at the sold prices is good. You can do the same on Gun Joker. Just bear in mind that each of those respective outlets take a big wet bite out of your proceeds. Leupold gets a bad rap here but in terms of resale to the masses, the moderately priced models have no equal.

Finished auctions on GunBroker will tell you what people are actually willing to pay.

Leupolds usually get higher prices on 24hourcampfire or RFC than they do here.

I have sold pre-owned optics for years. Nothing sells better that nice old gloss Leupolds, and I mean nothing! I work alot of gun shows. Rimfire models add to the value. Ebay prices are crazy sometimes, but always check median pricing for completed auctions. Condition is really important. Dings, ring marks, and discolored tubes reduce value considerably. Glass condition is paramount for me.

Older Leupolds tend do well on eBay, especially the gloss and silver ones. I think the buyers don’t worry about it because of the warranty. The silver Nikon does well too. I sold a bunch for friends, start a reasonable auction price and the bidding war may or may not take over.
