Press messing up tips

Newbie reloader and I’m trying to reload for my short mag. Slightly condensed loads. My press is coning out all the tips on my accubonds. Is this a common issue? My OAL is coming out spot on also.

First thing, be extremely careful running compressed loads as a new reloader. You can end up over pressure crazy easy.

Secondly, you could need a different seating dia stem for that bullet. What die are you using?

The die is an Rcbs win s-m seat 18

That and it’s doing it even at retumbos suggested starting load.

Pull the seating stem out of your die and compare how your selected bullet seats in it. You may find that the tip is hitting before the stem contacts the copper in which case you can either get a different stem or some people will drill their stems center a touch deeper.

Could be the stem.

Could be your neck tension

Could be that your really compressed

Could be virgin brass necks gripping the bullet

Even a mismatch on the stem really shouldn’t be deforming bullet tips with correct neck tension. Post a pic of the bullet tips

The advice above is good.

So retumbo is slower burning powder and usually not the first choice for short magnums (unless it is a big bullet for the caliber). My guess is you are trying to follow the recent fad of putting a 200 plus grain bullet into a 300wsm in a factory chamber and magazine. ( fyi to do this properly you should have a custom throat for the barrell and a magazine extension) Thus the reason for the compressed loads. If i am right.....I recommend stopping and redesigning your load to a 165 grain bullett and different powder. Once you get a lot of experience you can experiment with a little less danger.

This is not the case although I could see that being very problematic. This is for a 270 wsm and it is a 140 grain accubond. Retumbos starting load recommendation is at 68 grains and that is where I started the loading process. I will try and post a pic of the tip tonight. Like I said this is my first go at reloading also.

It is a little harder to see in the picture but it is actually still less than I remember. The 2 on the right are my reloads. The reason I’m using retumbo is from a 270 short mag guy from long range hunting.com. I believe he used to post here also. BigNgreen I believe was his name.

Glad to see your load is safe and in line with your caliber/bullet size.

As others have said take your die apart and see how it is actually contacting the bullet. Looks like it is pushing on the plastic and not tbe bullet shoulders.

Remove the seating stem from your die and place it in your vise. Take a drill bit and drill the end of the stem out until the stem isn’t contacting the bullet tip and is contacting the bullet at the Ogive. Start with a small size drill bit and work your way up until clearance is good.
