I just have a cheapo (I think it was a primos) one, can't even remember the name. I'm in the market for a new one though and am curious what others have had good success with as my kids have claimed mine now and there's no way I'm going to put that back in my mouth after they've been blowing there spit all over and through it!

I have two Circe calls which I bought sometime in the late 70's. They were made right here in AZ :) Someone else makes them now.
40 some odd years ago My hunting buddy and I went to Globe for a Javelina contest / hunt at which point we didn't even know what one looked like. A very nice guy took us under his wing and showed us the ropes and we both got our archery pigs. The fellow was helping film a bear calling video with Larry D. Jones up in Oregon and saw that I was really interested in learning how to predator call . he took me to the local sporting goods store and set us up with Circe calls, showed us what was supposed to sound like, and off we went. Called in many fox, bobcat, birds of prey, coyotes etc. I still have a few new "voices" for my calls. Still enjoy calling to this day.

I would say an electronic call (if legal) if you are blind calling. If not, I'd prefer a mouth call where you can move.

I don't really think the actual brand of call makes a bit of difference. Tried a number of different types of calls and the response has been inconsistent. What I carry now is a Primos Bear Buster (worked about as good as anything else) and an elk call that I can try an mimic an elk calf.

Here on Vancouver Island, we have the luxury of seeing a pile of bears at various distances so if calling bears is something you a guy wants to try, you have lots chances to experiment with bear reaction to call

Be careful, unseen bears have a knack of showing up tight on top of you.

How long do you call for? I've heard 15-30 minutes of belting out to give them time to run up on you.

I normally call to bears I see that are generally in a nasty spot I dont want to climb into, or I call to get them change position so I can get a better look. Allot of them outright bail when they hear the call. Some get real curious and try to get eyes on, some ignore it and on the rare occassion, they come in hard.

So not long.

That said, I have whaled away on calls trying to get a response from a bear I see and have had another one show up right on top of me from behind "like the one in the pic above did".

If I were blind calling in my area "that is thick with bears and lions" I'd be in an elevated position where I could see 360 degrees. I think Id keep my calling sequences short and loud and then sit still and quiet watching for one to sneak in.

I use fawn in distress on an electronic call, blind calling in areas with a lot of sign. In dry areas I setup near water with a pinch point in the terrain. Mind the wind hiking in and when you place the call. Sit quiet for 5 minutes then call non stop-ish for 30-50 minutes. Most of the bears I have called in showed up around half an hour. I’ve had them come within 15 yards of the call when it’s full volume. If the wind is variable I’ve never had one come in.
