Hi. I’m starting the process of building on a bare, short action, pre 64 model 70. Action is complete, minus barrel, stock, floor plate, magazine spring and follower. Looking for gunsmith recommendations. Also wondering if anyone has re-barreled a pre 64 with a factory take off. Thanks

Pre 64 m70 are long action only. Perhaps you have a recent model crf model 70 which do come in a short action AFAIK.

I wouldn't use a factory barrel the extractor cut likely won't line up. You'll want to go custom for the barrel for sure.

Stocks are tricky for the m70 there's not a lot of options for them. What sort of rifle are you trying to build?

Mcmillan, stockys and bell and carlson do synthetic stocks for the m70. You can find a factory stock probably pretty cheap also.

There is a good smith in western Nebraska give him a call. I say mix the old with the new and put a Proof carbon fiber 22 creed barrel on it. Assuming its a standard bolt face.

Thanks! Looks like there are some nuances that differentiate between long and mag actions. Even what Winchester called a “short mag”, in the day.

Plan would be a lightweight varminter with 20” barrel chambered in .22-250 ai. I like the McMillan game stalker style stock.

Carbon runs cooler. Not into the crapmoor fad. Ackley was ahead of his time.
Haha. Crapmoor that funny. Unfortunately I think that’s here to stay. Ackley stuff is good but it’s not mainstream unfortunately. 280ai is probably the most “mainstream” even that isn’t that common. I’ve never compared ballistics on a 22 creed vs. 22-250ai

Take a look at the bansner rifles for inspiration. Always loved them. modern, classy and classic all at the same time. I can't afford one but did a similar build on an m70 using one of their stocks and I love it.

Sunny Hill can help you with your missing magazine components. You can use an original take off barrel, lining up the extractor cut is not a problem. If you want an original contour but a new barrel, I think Lilja has it in their arsenal of contour files. Theres a fellow named Kevin Weaver in CO who can build your rifle stem to stern.
