So I'm pretty much a newbie to playing the Points game, I bought a Point in Wyoming last year and that's all I have.

Going forward I'd like to buy in 2 states with the strategy of saving up for a "premium" Unit in one, and being able to hunt an area with a decent deer population in the other every 2 years or so.

I also gotta keep in mind that the farther I have to drive the less I get to hunt. So being that I live in Boise I've pretty much decided to go with either Utah or Nevada.

I want to do mainly archery.

So, what would you do, Utah or Nevada?

Both have sad draw odds. Utah has a hybrid system where half tags go to most point holders and other half goes into drawing with everyone else. So you do get a chance at a tag. Nevada is based on the squared system so if your really lucky you could also draw. Both offer very limited non resident tags

Also with Utah current point creep starting now its doubtful you could ever catch up into the max point category for any premium drawings, you would always be relying on luck. Utah offers very few premium deer units and less tags. Utah is fairly cheap as right now you only need to buy a license every other year with the right planning. It's ten bucks a species after that

If you want archery CO takes 2-3 points for 95% of the early archery hunts. Keep that in mind and plan accordingly.

My strategy was simple. I started in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming between 6 to 3 years ago. Cashing in Colorado this year with 5 points. Wyoming I hope to cash out soon and not build again. I'll hold Arizona, Utah, and start Nevada in hopes for a premium tag (not best in state but better than average deer numbers, trophy size, and lower than average hunting pressure. I'm only 23 so I can afford to wait.

My strategy for most western states is to pull a premium tag once and likely not play the point system again after that except in whatever state I live in. Strategy may change 10-15 years from now when I've used up most points.

Nevada and Utah, both are close and both offer great Archery deer hunting. One allows you to apply twice with one hunting license.

Good luck!

Don't over look the general hunts in Utah either. I hunted a general unit in Utah last year for archery and had a great hunt. Lots of high country archery units in Co can be had with 0 points.

How does it work where you can buy a license in utah once every two years?

Only works if you dont draw anything. Your license is good for a full year so you can apply twice with the same license. Just have to make sure you apply the following year before the date that you bought your license the previous year. Hope that makes sense.

It works regardless of if you draw. License is good for 365 days so the same license can be used to apply twice. Ie first time later in application period second time earlier before 365 day period is up. Also you don't need current license to hunt just needs to be current for drawing period. ie if you draw on your second application period your tag is good without the licence and you can wait to buy licence until the next years application period. The state has discussed making changes but to my knowledge has left this loop hole unchanged
