So ice spent some time out west mostly in Colorado , a little in Wyoming, and Arizona. My family is considering moving out that way ( I'm a structural engineer wife's a nurse RN) in case you know if any good jobs .... We know lots of the good aspects of living there what do you miss if you've moved from the East or what would you say to someone that is new levels living there?

By the way ... I really value most Roksliders opinions ... So thank you ahead of time

I've never lived back east, so I can't comment on what I'd miss. I have worked back there and I also can't comment on what I'd miss, except for maybe clam bakes; those are awesome and beat the crap out of a BBQ. I'm a civil engineer (PE) with a structural emphasis, but I'm not a structural (SE) and I don't know if I care to ever become one. Get your CA PE, so I can subcontract work to you and I don't need to get my CA PE. I think smaller markets will have nepotism issues, which wouldn't be un-expected, but any major markets will have jobs available for both you and your wife's skill set. Best of luck whatever you choose.

I'm from back east been in Colorado for about six months. I love everything about being here aside from the cost of living being a good bit higher. I'm trying to buy a house and i can't move fast enough to get an offer in on something. You should be fine though.

It's great out here, although the western paradigm of snow "removal" will leave you scratching your head.

I moved to Montana this past year.. It really sucks here. No elk, no deer, just wolves and to many hunters... Colorado is where it is...

Moved to Montana 2 years ago from Massachusetts and can honestly say that I don't miss a single thing from that state.

I'm a couple of years from retiring from the Marines...but my wife and I will be in the same situation (she is also a RN). We have pretty much picked Colorado, but I'm still looking at Montana. Either choice we will be happy with. Good luck on your decision, keep us updated on where you pick.

I moved from Pa to Wy. Several years ago... Wy is fine I had to get use to the wind.. Winters here are not bad. Compared to NW Pa. Not much for snow removal here... As far as plowing roads... We should of went to Colorado though... Because the wolves chased all the elk there... Just joke in

I see more out of state license plates every day than I do CO plates. You would think that tourist season would be over.......but I think there's a lot of people that have "moved" here that just keep their out of state plates. Either that or we have more tourists 365 days a year than residents. Either way......it's become WAYYYY too crowded.

Tim, a former coworker of mine works for POWER Engineers in one of the MO offices, but they have offices in Idaho and have seemed to expand their structural market. I do construction drawings for a structural engineering firm here in MO and I'd be lying if I said I didn't take a look at their job postings from time to time. Recently their was a job posting that sounded like I had just written a description of myself. I won't lie, I'm too scared. Sad to say. Maybe I'll come around now that I'm getting old and crusty (almost 31 :D ).

You don't want Colorado, just ask all the people who already live there. :D Hahahaha. Hey man, it's their fault for living in such a beautiful place that people would want to live!

I moved to Utah from West Virginia 2 years ago and don't miss a thing about the east. Once I came here the hunting opportunity, scenery and access to public lands made me decide Id never return east again.

I'm a civil PE in California. Lots of work here, but it's California. Even here it's tough to find structural work. I have a lot of Structural friends, and they do civil work. It's tough for structural graduates to get structural jobs, most become civils. The weather is great here, pay is high, but so are houses, but it's crazy California, too far west. I'd move to Utah!! It's BOOMING!, people are conservative, lots of hunting opportunity, people are friendly. I'd move there now, but I like money too much. I'd like to retire to Utah, that's the plan!! My wife's sister lives near SLC. Colorado has become too liberal (Denver, Boulder), Wyoming, Montana, and Ideeho are great but too rural(not much work). Az, Nv, are other good choices for a structural!!

I moved from SW PA to Montana 4 months ago. My wife is also an RN, and I'm in IT, so I just need an internet connection. It's definitely awesome out here with tons of opportunity. Just tried ice fishing for the first time last month. And if you love the snow, the skiing is great. The snow removal is rather comical.

I moved from northern MD to Utah in '05 and haven't looked back. Only things I miss are my family and the food, mainly fresh seafood. What I don't miss definitely outweighs what I miss! Definitely don't miss the traffic or rude people! Also getting away from humidity is a plus, both summer and winter are much more enjoyable!

Good luck in your decision and finding work. And as others have said: don't move to "my" state, there are no elk or deer here!
