Portland metro and hunting

I have an opportunity that would require a move to Portland. Any feedback on the area and hunting? Public land is great! Private diy clubs are okay, big game, turkeys.

How is it in general for someone who is not in love with indoor lifestyle?

You have spring Chinook running through down town portland, excellent salmon fishing in the columbia, awesome offshore fishing an hour away. Good hunting in eastern oregon abs decent roosevelt hunting in western oregon. Lots of choices, if you have to be in a big city there are a lot worse.

Good food and drink are no longer at the top of my agenda. I am kind of over big cities. Eastern OR hunting is for elk or blacktail? Pigs?

Eastern Oregon will be Elk, Mule Deer, some pigs but not a lot. West side will be Roosevelt elk, black tail, Turkey to the south, lots of fishing. Great beer and coffee.

Lots of gray days in the winter. Summers are mostly gorgeous with temps in the mid 80s and little precipitation.

Portland is a cool city but you have to grow to value the eclectic nature of the people or you'll think the place is filled with loonies.

You have a lot of options for hunting and fishing from Portland. Like has been states to the east you have elk, mulies, some whitetail, bear, turkeys, and some antelope if you draw a tag. To the west you have elk, blacktails, and bear.

Plenty of good fishing to be had in all directions as well.

What type of employment opportunity is it?

Wilderness unlimited sucks, there are much better options. I forgot to mention that there is really good waterfowl hunting within 20 minutes of downtown.

Lot nicer places to live, but having a freezer full of elk and salmon, and enjoying a night of micro brews isn't a bad deal.

I have no complaints. I have lived 30 miles south of Portland my whole life. Their are more opportunities to hunt and fish than a guy could ever have time for. The Mule deer in OR is all 100% draw with the exception of some hybrids up at the top of the cascades. Everything else can be hunted OTC every year with pretty good success.

I spent the last 20 years in San Francisco. Naked elk ride would surprise me, naked bike ride - not so much

I would suggest getting a place just outside of Portland, not directly down town. As long as you don't mind 30-60 ( as long as you don't work 9-5) minute commute you can get away from the city quite easily.

As for the other stuff, I'm heading out for turkey scouting tommorrow be back Tuesday. PM me what you'd like to know and I'll do my best to answer. I've lived in Portland my entire life sans 3 years.

Just kidding. Although game populations aren't as high as some of the other western states, there is a lot of public land. An hour to hour and a half in either direction from Porltand and you can be in big areas of public land.

WU has ranches in Oregon. I'm a member, but just for the upland bird hunting. I hunted blacktail on one of their ranches in 2012 on a last minute OTC tag, but that is the only big game property I have been to. In my opinion they are nice places for a family type environment, but land use rules don't really allow backpack hunting and are not my cup of tea.

I've been casually on the lookout for a good private lease option over the past year, and have not come up with anything. I think there is lots of good private land, but most people hunt and if they don't there isn't too much trouble finding a friend or family member that does. Like most things, its all about who you know.

Big areas of public land with free for all access our a draw type system? How are your pig population? In CA private land pig hunting is great, public land for pigs is armed hiking unless you know someone who got lucky and found a honey hole. How is turkey hunting on WU ranches around you? Thanks!

Pig hunting is Oregon is pretty non existent. There are very few pigs here and most of them are on private property.

You may want to look not in Portland itself (unless you like paying taxes) but in the suburbs (depending on where your job will be). Anywhere in Washington or Clackamas county seem to be a lot better than Multnomah (where Portland is located) county.

I live in Clackamas, which is just east of Portland. I love my community (very pro gun/lots of outdoorsy people).

There are a lot of clubs around but most of these are duck/goose/upland places. Most of the big game hunting is done through guides instead of ranches.

There is a lot of opportunity for chasing big game and birds all over the state. I believe I last heard that he state is comprised of 53% public land. That isnt a whole lot, but its a lot better than back east.
