Portable Bone Saw

Wondering what most of you guys are running for a portable bone saw for cutting horns off the skull plate that is lightweight, effective and doesn't take up alot of space in the pack. This past few trips i've been carrying a Gerber with the blade for bone. It works but wondering if anyone else has a better idea or system. Any feedback would be great, thanks everyone!

I like my little packable gerber. Its a little on the heavy side but works pretty darn good.

I carry a wyoming saw when I have the room. They are great but not exactly minimalist. They pack up nicely. I have never used the Gerber so I can't compare.

I've been using a Gerber Myth fixed blade saw lately. Liked it so much I have two now and just leave one in each of my packs. Super light and has a nice "T" handle for good cutting leverage.

I came up with this idea a few years ago before my first sheep hunt. I just took the blade off a gerber bone saw and punched a few holes in it. Then went to wal-mart and bought a $2 cutting board and traced the shape of the blade with the addition of a T for your palm. (Must have). Went to True Value and picked up aluminum screws and nylon nuts. I have used this saw on 3 dall sheep with no issues. With a total weight of 2 oz.

I use the Outdoor Edge saw out of their combo set and like it.The set is on the heavy side and I'm always thinking I should leave it home but it is handy and seems to get used either by me or a buddy asking to use it enough that it stays packed.

Good information guys. I've always had good luck with the Gerber but was curious of what everyone else was using! Has anyone ever used New Archery Products (NAP) zip saw for hacking horns off? Thing is tiny other than if it works. Have a feeling once those little teeth filled up from crap it would be worthless.

^i just started carrying a wire saw in my pack but havn't had a chance to use it yet. wonder how they work on wet hide/bone and how well they hold up. it'd be a bummer to get halfway through a skull cap and have the wire break.

Exactly. I just haven't heard anyone using them for the skull plate. I've heard guys say they work great on the pelvic bone but man, so much more bone on the skull that it would have to go through.

If you guys are talking about the folding blade Gerbers that have the wood and bone blades........I have one that sits in the bottom of a bin somewhere. It was the worst working saw I've ever used. I'd rather break the antlers off than use that thing again. I used to have a WY saw that works great, but it disappeared a few years ago and haven't seen it since. Picked up the Gerber Gator saw for $20 after that and it works just like the WY saw........but they are heavier than the super lightweight ones. But I'll carry that weight to have a functional saw any day. Having said that........I usually don't carry a saw anymore.

I have carried the SOG folding saw and it is worlds better that the Gerber I destroyed on bone. It is heavier but is in a whole class of its own. I am justifying the extra few ounces since I am adding a stove to my sl5 and figure I can use if for cutting wood as well.

I've been using the Sawvivor Saw & carrying both a wood & bone blade. The saw is awesome & love it! But just read that the manufacturer is out of busines... Crap!
