Portable Bear Fence

Doing an Alaska drop in hunt next year, thinking the UDAP type fence may be worth the 5.5 lbs. Any of you use/have used one? Would appreciate your opinions. Thanks.

I took a diy fence when we went sure made sleeping at night a lot easier. I don't spook easy but when you see one close they leave a lasting impression. I thought someone mentioned you can also rent one

If it gives you piece of mind, go for it. I have one. Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't.

The bears that rip people out of their tents at night seem to be the park bears that get comfortable around humans. The wilder backcountry bears don't seem to do it, FWIW.

They are also good for guarding food and meat though.

Yep, that's mostly why I made mine, to use in case we needed to leave a raft, gear, tent or meat unattended for a while.

I snore loud enough to deter the curious...unless the snoring sounds like a mating call...

Take the fence!
it's worth taking the time to set them up but just a little tip make sure they are grounded well or they don't work. I made up double grounding rods for mine and it makes all the difference

We also had grounding problems. We set the center wire as a floating ground so you needed to touch the center and top or center and bottom wire to shock.

You aren't the only one....i had seen those comments before setting up my fence. My ground isn't especially light...but I wasn't backpacking it. I have 2 1/2" copper pipes appx 24" long connected to a #10 copper wire thats appx 6' long. I pound in the one Cu pipe close...then the other as far away in good ground as my wire will reach.

FWIW, I tested with only one ground rod and the fence didn't work...but was fine with the second

Yep, mine can be setup the same. Either all three wires can be "hot" or you can set one to be grounded along with using a grounding stake.

It's shown in this post. You just rung a wire from the grounding clip to the middle wire instead of making it hot.

Yep this is how I do it. No worries about ground or bringing a tester. Works if you touch two wires and complete the circuit

I just like redundancy so I did the stake and middle wire. Hopefully the low wire and ground would keep smaller critters out that may not be big enough to make a circuit with the middle wire.

We have been running them in AK on our hunts. Adds great piece of mind that you won't return to camp to find a rodeo grounds. Seems UDAP buys commercial units and makes a big mark-up. Just go to your local Farm & Feed (Mills Fleet Farm here) and buy a D battery unit and some white ribbon fencing. We bring take-off carbon golf shafts and tape on the strip. Much less$$.
