If I'm working alone I listen to podcasts all day long. I listen to podcasts on my commute every day to and from work. I've learned more from podcasts in the last 6 years then all 12 years of public school combined. I find a subject that interests me and I go on my own and research more about it.

I listen to Military, hunting, true crime and random ones that spark my interest based on the guest.

I'll use MeatEater as an example when I say, some people say that they hate all the small talk on podcasts, But MeatEater as an example, is not an educational podcast. It's a radio show, with personalities who talk about hunting. Sometimes they have guests who are specialist in an area of study and the podcast is informative. Sometimes it's just dudes shooting the sh**. If you don't like the cast then the show isn't for you. I personally have been listening to it every Monday on my commutes for over 6 years. I know all the dudes who come in the show and enjoy it. It's entertaining. Now if you don't follow along every week and don't fully understand the personalities and what's going on it can be confusing and not entertaining. I get that.

People also complain about the ads and sponsors. Podcasts are free. They have to make money some how to keep the podcast going.

If your looking for educational podcasts, they are very specific, And they are out there. Lex Freidman, Huberman Labs, Robb Wolf come to mind.

I would rather read if I’m not doing anything or am trying to learn something. But if I’m working or driving I love listening to podcasts on subjects I’m interested in Hunting, Fishing, and the outdoors.

I somewhat agree with this. What I don’t like the most is when the title is intriguing and they just skim over the topic. Often the rest of the podcast is highly side tracked and down many rabbit holes that don’t pertain. Or the host is constantly interrupting with their opinion.

No good rock metal stations, I won't pay for xm/sirius radio, I hate bro country and rap music.
I've got podcasts for guns, hunting, music, trucks, history,
I need to find the time and move my CD's to a thumb drive but that will take weeks.

It took me awhile to get around to the podcast thing. Now I rather enjoy them at the gym in the morning instead of music or on long driving trips when I’m alone. I have a a few favorites that I randomly check out depending on my mood and especially enjoy listening to interviews/conversations with people that ordinarily wouldn’t specifically look out to learn about, those are usually the ones I end up liking and learning the most from. There’s several that I check out but My go to podcasts are Rogan, Mike drop, and cleared hot. Usually one of them are talking to someone interesting or entertaining. I am burned out on the “news” and like trying to multitask learning something and exercising or driving rather than just spacing out to music.

I have been in education for 29 years. The lost art of reading comprehension is rampant in our younger generation where they have been raised watching video clips. Trying to get this generation to actually read something and comprehend it is a challenge. Not all but the vast majority. Podcasts as said above have taken the place of articles and quality articles. Personally the art of writing a clear and concise article is quickly becoming a lost art as well. I listen to podcasts daily during my 40 minute commute.
Is reading comprehension becoming a lost art because we are realizing that not all information needs to be propagated through writing?

I love a good written article, but they are not that common. So many great podcasts out there by people who really know their subject matter, but may not be great writers.

True. It seems most of what you read online is fluff just to fill pages by repeating themselves and pointing out something mundane and obvious. Very irritating when your time is so limited.

I feel like there are plenty of good print articles and books out there still. But with work and kids, I can only get a maximum of an hour per day of reading done. Podcasts allow me to learn while doing boring tasks at work or while driving. I agree that reading is probably a better way to get information, but without podcasts I wouldn’t even have the chance to learn about 90% of the topics they cover
