Pizza Cutter Tires-Any Regrets?

I'm considering a wheel and tire package for my F150 going -1...255/80/17 to replace the 275/70/18s that are on it now.
Both are 33", both are LT Load Range E.
The 17s would be a fair amount narrower, which is what I want for snow and ice.
The new wheels would have less positive offset, which would result in about the same track width.

Anybody do it and regret it later?
 
I'll take more sidewall whenever I can on a pickup.

I kept going wider and wider on the toyota. This last time around went with a 35x10.5r15. Very happy with the size. Only reason I'll change is if I cant source tires of that size anymore.

They do seem a lot less grabby when hitting slush or standing water on the road.

Get into the smaller lighter rigs, and sxs tires work rather well. Lot more options for a tall skinny tire too :cool:
 
I love my tall skinny tires on my Silverado. I feel like I can get through deeper snow easier than when I had wider tires. I actually have clearance for chains on all four tires now.
 
I say go for it. I am a fan of tall and skinny.
Skinny allows more clearance in the wheel well for taller. And cutting through the snow, and mud, works well if there is a solid bottom that taller tires can reach.
For years I had a Suburban with 33x9.5x17s. That rig was near unstoppable as long as I could find a solid bottom within 16”. It could handle a lot of logging “roads” that my coworkers got stranded on.
I may try and get my current truck back on pizza cutters when I need new tires.
 
I went with 255/75/17 on my 2nd gen tacoma. Gave me the tallest tire that would fit stock suspension. At the same time I did rear air lockers and went with a mud terrain tread so not exactly apples to apples compared with the previous all terrain tires. Plus I am usually aired down when tackling nasty stuff..the extra height/ground clearance is also helpful in those situations. The truck is much more capable than my driving and will take me places I should not be driving.

IMO I think the diameter thing is getting way into the weeds of things that matter in a tire. If the skinny tire makes the most sense for your rig then go for it, I do not regret it but in my case it was for more ground clearance and fitting the tire in the existing wheel well.

When I lived in Vail, Colorado, the City service trucks (F250s) ran pizza cutters and they worked in severe winter weather.
I have had to provide service to a few Toyota image-chasers who put it in the ditch because they were desperate for the Traxxas look.
 
Had them on my GX 470. They were great. Only stepped down to a 75 for a softer sidewall and less road noise (all season vs all terrain).
 
I went from Toyo Load Range E 285/75r16 to Falken Wildpeak Load Range C 255/85r16 on my 2017 Tacoma 4x4 Long bed and I am NEVER looking back. Best choice ever. The load range E were sooo hard and brutal without airing down. The Load Range C tires offer a much smoother ride on and off road.
