Pins for archery elk...20/30/40 vs 30/40/50?

How comfortable are you with long shots? Are you good at splitting the difference between pins? Try sighting in at 25 40 55 or 30 45 60, then see how you manage random distances. I like a 3 pin, its quicker than a single, but without the clutter of a 5

I’d recommend sighting in for 20 but walking around with your pins set 30-50. Since it’s a slider, your 20 and 30 pins should be really close at 30 and 40. As mentioned, it’s easy to shoot your 30 pin closer and it’s realistic to have a quick shot at 50 yds.

I know lots of people think a slider is the best thing to happen with bow sights after laser rangefinders were invented. If the truth was know, those sliders have saved plenty of elk from taking an arrow.
Some mentioned the close pin to be able to shoot a grouse. Next to getting in on elk, grouse can be a fun side adventure on a grinding elk hunt.
When an elk encounter happens at close range in September, it usually happens way faster than people think. The 5 seconds to dial the pin can mean the bull just moved 20 yards, closer or farther. My rule is as soon as you see an elk coming in the timber….draw. The best for me has been pins starting at 20 and go to 60, 70 or whatever your comfortable max range is. Practice shooting between pins and interpolating between the 10 yard increments will become second nature.

I’m hunting is a double pin vertical. 25 and 45 is the split. Easily hold over to 50 without dialing. My bubble is dead on at 57 if I need to take a follow up shot without time to dial.

Do what you are most confident in.
I've never been able to talk myself into trying a slider as I want to be ready for anything once I'm drawn back or if I just can't move to adjust slider. I shoot 7 fixed pins, 20-80yds.
My bulls have been shot at the following distances:
35yds
17yds
30yds
20yds
50yds

I like 4 pins. 20-50 and use the 50 as my slider

Edit. I've never had to use the slider in hunting situations, only practice. I also mark/practice using the top of my bubble as a 55-60 yard reference to use in a pinch.

Same here. I feel like this is the optimal setup. Depending on your bow speed you should probably take extra time to dial past 50

I've seen guys that I've been calling for blow out elk coming in 3 different times because they were fiddling with their slider.....

I get it, they are more accurate on the 3D range....but dang, we just don't get that many opportunities to be screwing up the good ones.

5 pin slider negates these types of questions..
But if you're set on 3, 30-40-50. Your flight path between 20 and 30 should only vary by ~2". And wouldnt be a valid excuse for why the elk got away.

Can't beat a 5 pin slider for elk!

I am the odd man out. I shoot 20-40 on a 3 pin. Triple stack. Some of it is force of habit as I know my pin gaps are much smaller than they were 10 years ago and I could comfortably get to 50 yards shooting gaps. However, my close shots often call for precise placement, frontals, shots in tight vegetation and I just like to hold dead on and hit behind the pin.

I've been doing that for decades. 25 covers everything close....Easy to gap anything in the 30's

20,30,40 makes for too tight of a pin gap

Unlesss you shoot an old slow bow.

I'm a 30 (27 dead on) 40, 50 shooter. inside that the poi vs poa is negligible unless you are shooting maybe for points or are daring and threading the needle through a 3" hole in the brush...and even then take a shot or two at 20 and ten and you'll know what your arrow is doing and be able to make those shots.

I gap shoot anything between my pins and out to 56ish then I start dialing. In reality Holding my 50 over out to 60 is a dead elk or deer every time also. You could add a 60 yard pin I guess but IMO there is zero reason to have more than 1 pin for 30yds and in.

I run 27/40/50 with 50 as my floater. I’ve been doing it for a while and seems to work well for the most part. The problem is when I’m shooting a tiny raccoon target at a 3D shoot at 33 yards - hard to make a precise shot. I don’t dial at that yardage since I wouldn’t dial a 33 yard shot for hunting distances

I shoot a 5-pin slider 30-40-50-60-70. I've had second shots on elk out to 70 I would have had no time to dial, so there is no way I am stopping my pins at 50.

Single pin for me. Was practicing last night and if I crank my slider to 35 yds, the. I hit 3” high at 20 and 3” low at 40. Seems like a perfect spot to let my sight at for those unknown shot distances
