Biggest hurdle/barrier to entry into hunting?

I will say that I've been involved in a bunch of different outdoor pursuits and I've never encountered the attitude towards new people that some hunters have, including some in this thread. It would never occur to me to tell someone who wanted to start kayaking, or backcountry skiing, or climbing to "just get after it," or that they were lazy or wanted a handout if they asked to be shown the ropes. The idea of mentorship and education is very much part of the culture. Maybe one difference is that people generally don't watch some ski videos and think they are going to start dropping Alaskan spine lines. I can imagine guys with no skills at all watching youtube and thinking that hunting means walking into the woods and smoking a 6 point, instead of waking up at 4, sitting in the cold, and not seeing anything.

We drag newbs on dirtbikes around the mountain providing they arent whiners and actually try. They damn sure dont get introduced to the super secret single track or special hillclimbs though. Youve gotta earn your way into those.

Feel the same about bringing newbs into the spots I hunt.

If you arent willing to just get after it and try it on your own. Then yes, you are lazy, and are asking for a handout. Why should I waste my time on you? Lotta folks these days seem to feel that they are owed..

Biggest barrier to hunting is a lack of ambition or a real flame (an intense desire) to hunt.

Most people have a list of excuses a mile deep.

People want instant gratification and prefer to talk about things more than they actually enjoy doing things.

If they can't buy it, have their hands held during the process, or somehow have it handed to them on a silver platter - there's an excuse.

The list of sniveling bitch "barriers" on this thread is hilarious.

The top things I am seeing is money, mentors, and confusion regarding regulations. Sniveling bitch what? We don't really need peoples opinions on what they think of what someone is saying was a barrier for them, good for you if you never had to deal with that. The purpose of this thread is to network and see what’s on peoples minds. We need to grow this and keep supporting each other, my home state has something trying to get on the ballot to ban this thing we all love, my goal is to make sure that gets shut down hard and we never have any state even remotely close to passing that.

A lot of people have covered it but comes down to lack grit and comparison (as we know it is the thief of joy)

Let me explain-

Grit- defined by author Angela Duckworth as “the passion and perseverance for long term goals” great book by the way. We all want it now. The best gear, the biggest buck or bull, the clout, the success without failure, and the knowledge without the work. To sum it up, get out there and take your rifle or how for a walk, enjoy it and learn along the way. Mentors help but there is so much info online that you can go practice on your own.

Comparison- I have talked with a lot of coworkers/aquintences that see the success my hunting partners and I have had and the first question is often - “where did you go to get that one” or “can you take me” I believe people are afraid to go and come back empty handed, or to shoot a small bull or buck. You have to start somewhere and you can’t compare yourself to someone who has done it their whole life. You can’t hunt for instagram or to look cool, or to compare to guys online or hunting personalities.

If you are new and truly want to get into it, you need to make sure you are doing it for yourself and not for likes. It’s hard and frustrating but that’s what makes it so rewarding.

Seems like you heard what was on his mind. You just didnt like what was said.

He was not wrong.
Correct I don’t see the sniveling bitching he is seeing and called it out, I’d like to hear how the three topics I pointed out line up with that. You uber-badasses hijacking this thread with your tough guy competition aren’t contributing anything. Feel free to go start a thread about how easy hunting is and how we need less hunters if you want.

I’m sure I’ll be Fudd flamed for this but there are some hunters who grew up with no mentors and pre internet. Sympathy for the “I don’t have a mentor crowd” is a little tough when as kids we were figuring it out in the 1900s. I was jealous as all get out of kids who had dads or gpas that took them hunting.

People won't admit it - but they want hunting to be easy.

When it's not, the sniveling, excuses and "barriers" start piling up.

I'm sorry for your hurt feelers.

This is a fair take, easier these days to figure it out all on your own, but that’s still something to get over and should be thought about.

You have to make up your mind, shitting on a thread made up of people talking about how hunting is not easy, which you agree with, but don’t want to hear about any of the reasons it’s not easy for people?

Nobody is hijacking anything. Believe it or not, some people do have different views and opinions on the subject. I am not sure why you have an issue with that.

I still want to know. If a new guy is not willing to help himself, why should anybody else?

Haha yes I am pissed that a thread started with good intent has turned into a dick measuring competition. Like I said, I’m trying to figure things out and get barriers, not peoples opinions of what other people’s barriers are, a little over your tough guys thick as skulls I guess. Gosh you guys are badass!!!

Where is this dick measuring competition? You are getting whiny because people have opinions that dont line up with yours. Get over it.

You act like every person new to the sport needs to be fast tracked to the top. That is not the case.

Your description of a dick measureing contest is strange.

You are the only person that is going to help you overcome your "barriers".

Different opinions should be considered/welcome.

Having been posssessed with hunting for 5 decades with ZERO mentors, and having heard every barrier (excuse) under the sun from so many people for so long, maybe take my opinion for what you've paid for it.

Nah not strange, your lack of understanding is staggering, you’re coming on here on a thread full of people saying what was in their way when they got started. Then called it sniveling bitch excuses. THEN, I pointed out that this thread isn’t for shitting on what people think is a hurdle they had to navigate getting into hunting. I am trying to understand and see how we can minimize that, you and butt buddy Steve are coming in here with your tough guy mantra saying it’s all bullshit, congratulations I know not everything is a huge fricking deal and life or death when comes to hunting. **** me for trying to get peoples opinions and brainstorm how to make hunting more accessible to garner future hunters and support. Hunting for 5 decades with no mentor? AWESOME! I bet that was something you had to navigate and figure out when you were getting into this, and you figured it out, GREAT!

When did I say people need to be fast tracked to the top?😂

I just think you should change the name of this thread to "What's your excuse?"

It all depends where you are measuring from!
