Pins at 20/30/40

Sept archery elk....shots honestly could be anything...thick timber to longer shots in meadows/burns.

Should I change my sight pin setup to 30/40/50?

Rookie perspective, but this close to the season I’d say stick with what you’re used to. If 20-30-40 is your mental “default setting”, keep it there to minimize the chance of using the wrong pin.

That said, I have my top pin at 30, but I’ve done that for a while and it’s what I’m used to. I also know that if I hold it dead on at 20 I’ll only be about 3” high, so it hopefully won’t be a problem for me.

I would change it to 30-40-50. You still have a month and you should be able to have your bow sighted in one shooting session in about 30 minutes pretty easily. I shoot one vertical pin set 30 or 35. I only slide it if the shot is past 40 which has never happened for me on an elk hunt in 35 years.

30-40-50 (difference between 20/30 is a lot less than 40/50.

Or better yet buy and extra pin from MBG and go 20-30-40-50. MBG will install for you and has excellent service and turnaround time.

I like 4 pins. 20-50 and use the 50 as my slider

Edit. I've never had to use the slider in hunting situations, only practice. I also mark/practice using the top of my bubble as a 55-60 yard reference to use in a pinch.

3 pin slider with dual indicators is my go to set up that way I always know my top and bottom pin and the middle splits those. Then I set it for the cover I’m hunting and the most likely distance of a shot in that cover.

30/40/50, and know your holdover on the 30yd pin to be able to shoot 10/20. Also shoot a few arrows at <10yds so you know where you're hitting. Chances are low you'd get a shot that close, but if it was gonna happen, it would be in an archery elk hunt.

5 pin slider negates these types of questions..
But if you're set on 3, 30-40-50. Your flight path between 20 and 30 should only vary by ~2". And wouldnt be a valid excuse for why the elk got away.

I made the switch to top pin at 30yds a couple years back and I have been happy with it.

It does have me apprehensive though. A lot of it depends on the country you plan on hunting. From experience a bull coming through brush at sub 10yds gives you virtually no time to think through aiming low. Couple that with finding a hole through the brush and the arrow being 4" high at 10yds is stacking the odds against you.

With the more open country I have hunted the last couple years it has been excellent.

That’s a good idea. I have a 5-pin setup 20-60. Would be interested to see what the top of my bubble aligns to. For range purposes only….Not that I ever should take a shot in the field past 60….

so evidently im the odd ball here, but heres what i do/dont do. i dont use slider anything, i never have time to slide when its go time nor do i want to be thinking about that, but it obviously works for others. 2. i use a 5 pin an set it up dead on at 25 35 45 55 65. then for my bow im good to go 0-30, anything 30s my pin is set for the middle and im good to go, etc etc out to 70. i dont shoot at game past 50 so im set.

I have a bg slider with the dual pointers. 3 pins archery elk i slide to 32,40,50. So i can shoot zero to 60 yards. 5/10 yards is 3/4 inches high. 60 yards bottom pin goes top of spine(drop is about 12 inches)
