We love our roadies. Have two that have been nesting on our cliff line. Most people don’t know they actually coo in the spring like a dove. I’ve seen one sitting on our roof cooing. Then I’ll catch both jetting across our yard like little buzz saws - makes me smile.

Great Gray Owl. Incredibly cooperative for a wild, unbaited bird. Let me get a few shots and went on it’s way. I’ve been trying to photo an owl for a long time and was so stoked it finally happened in such a big way.

Backyard boreal owl.

Interior Alaska has five common boreal owl species: Great Gray, Great Horned, Northern Hawk, Short-Eared, and Boreal Owls. The Boreal Owl is the smallest (~10 inches) and the Great Gray the largest (~33 inches).
The Short-Eared Owl migrates south for the winter, while the other 4 species are year-round residents.
