Seems most rifles sold today are sold with a factory picatinny rail. I have always used direct mount rings from Talley.
What is the preference when mounting a scope?

I would think that the more connections points of a picatinny rail give more room for error and a larger chance for failure.

Like most have used both. I started moving from Talley to rails because the rail has more adjustability with todays shorter scopes. Down size to rails it can sometimes put the scope higher when you add the rail and ring height. I actually removed a rail last night to put on a Talley where I wanted the scope as low as possible. As far as strength a 1 piece rail was pretty difficult to remove last night when I stripped a screw and then a 2nd. Its amazing how strong 1 piece of aluminum can be when it has 4 screws holding it to the receiver. I have stripped screws on a Talley before and pretty east to get off but that is a different story.
