I've heard Iceland and Churchill, Manitoba are some of the best places to see them. If you go at the right time to Churchill you might see both the lights and polar bears as it's their wintering ground. The best time to see the lights is supposed to be at the autumnal (fall) equinox which unfortunately is during hunting season, but Iceland's tourism site says you can see it almost all winter depending on your luck with cloud cover and solar activity.
