PFD on Float Hunt?

For those of you who have gone float hunting, do you wear a PDF? If so, what specific model did you use, and what were the pros/cons? I'm floating a river in the Brooks Range in AK in September and I've overlooked the PDF item. I'm looking for a lightweight (I'm already up against a gear weight limit), comfortable yet functional option. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help!

Yes on the PFD,, people have drown on Brooks Range rivers this year already.... We use kayak style PFDs.

Cool pic, Mr. Steve. Thanks for chiming in. Do you know what model you personally use and how much it weighs? Thanks!

I absolutely use a PFD 100% of the time while rafting/boating (goes for float hunts as well). Actually everyone on my boat does or they don't get on the boat. I also use a low profile kayakers style vest.

I run an astral. Carried over from white water guiding days. They work, are comfortable and functional

Thanks for the feedback, folks. I'll give the Astral a try. Looks unobtrusive, yet serves the purpose.

Check out stohlquist PFDs as well. I use the fisherman which has a couple handy pockets

ALWAYS use a PFD on river trips. Rivers especially cold ones are VERY dangerous. Exrasport makes a sweet eon angler vest thats still pretty mobile in whitewater and as already mentioned Astral and Stolquist make excellent PFD's.

PFD should be one of the first things on your list. Leave something else behind if you're up against weight issues.

I agree. If you are hauling in a raft, a PFD is nominal additional weight. Plus they have multiple functions. They are a seat in camp. Perhaps extra cushion or protection for your sleeping pad. Something to kneel on for those us with old joints.

Ohhhh and it will definitely keep you warm as an extra layer if needed.

Just get one thats comfortable so you'll wear it. Type III prefered. I hesitate to recommend one as it is really a personal choice. Minimal or fully loaded with pockets and all the bells and whistles...lots of options.
