Peterson 's Hunting - Small caliber article

Tiny little baby elk don't exhibit the rut thickened hide exhibited by true trophy 400" Utah bulls.

Tis but a calf. Even the measley 7mm Remington Magnum could harvest such a critter with a deep driving bullet bonded for maximum authority.
All of JVBs elk are 1000lbs. The little WY elk barely make it to 700 for a big one.

Maybe one day I will be a man like JVB and kill a real elk...one day....

@BuckSmasher, have you read the 223 thread? The entire thing, start to finish? Or one of the 6mm threads? The “223 crowd”, which I am a member of, didn’t drink some coolaid and get brainwashed overnight. Every single one of us who hunts with a .223 or 6mm was skeptical at first. I didn’t even click on the thread for at least the year, I figured it was a bunch of BS. When I was finally convinced to try the 223/77tmk combo, I shot several whitetails before I felt confident to carry that rifle for elk hunting.

If I would have had any negative experience, you bet your bottom dollar that I would have posted it in the thread and let the world know. And I think the vast majority would have did the same. There just has been little to no negative posts, and it’s not because there’s some grand conspiracy to convince everyone to use a cartridge/ bullet combo that is going to wound more animals. I could care less what anyone shoots, as long as you are recovering the animals you shoot.

And for me, the easiest, most consistent way to deliver a bullet to the vitals is with a suppressed .223 or .243. If I start seeing poor results on game, I’ll switch in a heartbeat. I HATE wounding animals.

I just feel like a lot of carcasses are sufficient evidence.

I don't know why I'm saying this. I guess it's been a week since I've said something on the internet so I have to.
No sure why I’m replying either, it’s beating the ghost of a long-dead horse at this point. Usually ignore these types of threads, but every so often it gets under my skin and I have to say something

You guys crack me up. When it comes to cartridge selection, there's no right choice. In certain situations, a .223 is a bit light. That's irrefutable. In many situations, a 30-06 is overkill. Again, also irrefutable.

Once you accept that everything in the universe is a compromise, you can let this stupid issue go. Besides, internet fights about hunting elk with a .223 are so 2023.

You are a believer already. You wouldn't recognize it if you saw it. Its not about facts or physics anymore. Its about belief. That is way stronger.

Yes I am a believer, because of evidence that I’ve saw with my own two eyes. It’s not a cult dude. Are you insinuating that if I had a poor experience with a 223, I would lie about it? That’s a pretty strong assumption to make about another mans character.

@BuckSmasher you didn’t answer the question above. Have you read this thread? I see you haven’t posted in it:
https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/223-for-bear-mountain-goat-deer-elk-and-moose.130488/page-131

What is your personal experience with taking game with a .223 shooting the 77 gr TMK?
Don't think I have read every single page. Spent a fair amount of time on there. I disagree with most of the conclusions drawn on there, that thread is for the folks that like and agree with the premise, I don't, so I don't post.

I have zero experience with 77 TMK. That said I have shot more critters with .223 than most of the people on this forum even the most ardent .223 folks. Mainly pigs of various sizes. Enough experience to believe its real that you can kill a moose with one, and enough to know its not a good idea.

All those dead animals are flukes and terminal ballistics is witch craft. Wallop factor is the most important.

Damn iron plated elk are the worst

We all have opinions and experience. Use a legal round, get as close as you can, and put the bullet where it belongs. Nothing else matters.

My favorite quote by Dave Petzal is this: "If you can’t shoot, it doesn’t matter what you use. If you can shoot, it doesn’t matter what you use."
Never heard that quote, but it’s a good one 👍
