Pedestal mounts, the good or bad?

Just curious if anybody has some input on elk pedestal mounts, I keep coming back to a design I really like. I don't have huge vaulted ceilings so I keep thinking I like this design because it won't be 15' in the air. This is just a pic I found on the web. Feedback appreciated from those who have them, thanks.

Pedestal mounts are the most impactful way to display a game head in my opinion. Couple things to keep in mind. 1. People are envious. Unless it's trophy sized, prepare for people to scoff at ped. mounting "average" elk. It's human nature. If you're like me, who cares. It's not for them. 2. Don't over do the habitat. I like the elements and composition of your pic, but it's too much. It should complement your mount, not compete with it. 3. Quality. They call shabby taxidermy "Hang um High" taxidermy for a reason. A ped. Is up close and personal for all to see. Make sure you have a good taxidermist. Most people don't know what good taxidermy looks like...do your research. Good luck!

My wife is not really a big fan of habitat mounts says they can look great just not fit into a rooms decor. I also suffer from low ceilings so I have a couple pedestal mounts.

As was stated I see some imperfections and they bothered me for awhile but my guests never mentioned them. They also take up a bunch of space so be ready for that. Both mine can swivel on the cabinet enabling me to turn them just right to minimize the space.

My buddy is making a European elk mount on a pedestal. We found some old knocked down fence post not far from where be shot it when we were there and he's going to build it out of that. It should look pretty good when it's done and will be something different.

I just got a "wall pedestal" back. I like it. Essentially what it sounds like, a pedestal mount form rigged to be wall hung. I like the way it looks. More interesting than a standard shoulder mount, but less space than a true pedestal.

Pedestal mounts are cool ( I have a Red Stag and in effect a pedestal in a full sized Black Bear mount) except they are now like a piece of furniture and they do take up a lot of space. I do think that they are a nice change of pace from the usual wall mount.

I talked it over with my wife for this years mule deer, but she didn't want it to take up the floor space in the room.

You can keep a pedestal mount pretty streamlined, depending on the pose. Here's one my son did for me.

That's a beautiful mount. Larger antlers require it be set out from the wall that's where you lose the space

Thanks for all of the input. I think I need to order my form in March so I'm trying to decide which way to go. Definitely like the look of the pedestal mount examples you all have. My deer is so low in my house it's nose is even with my face. I've positioned my elk skull in that room and it's even lower, so I thought at least with the pedestal mount I could maybe maneuver it around somewhat. Not sure, probably just need a bigger house with vaulted ceilings. Or the ultimate garage/shop/ man cave I've always wanted.

This is a ped I did last year. The bull taking some small aspens allowed me to tip the head and make this pretty compact.

You can get away with more elaborate habitat if it's well balanced.

Here's one I found online that I like. I'm going to do this year's bull like this with him bugling, and build the pedestal like in the picture out of beetle kill pine, since I killed him in the beetle kill pine. Haven't decided yet what to put on it for habitat. I'll figure that out later.

I have yet to see an elk on a cabinet in the wild......... Whassa matta with rocks and bushes and such?....

Same reason we prefer framed portraits to posters. Cabinets frame the piece like art. At the end of the day, its personal preference.

The mount is for you so it really does not matter what others think. I had my Nyala and Kudu done in a wall pedestal. The kudu had to go in the stairwell. I had a reedbuck done in a pedestal mount. They all turned out amazing and I was actually surprised at how well the reedbuck turned out.
