Peak 44 is a Wyoming company producing carbon fiber rifle stocks. Their Blacktooth stock, featuring a swept grip, has been available for Tikkas. The more modern Bastion stock has not, until now. I handled the rem 700 pattern Bastion when a few Weatherby 307s came into my shop. I was impressed at first blush with the ergonomics and quality, and proceeded to badger P44's PM JD Ponciano for a full year re: getting out (and not effing up) a Tikka offering. It arrived this week while I was traveling, and I dropped an 18" .223 Tikka into it tonight for initial evaluation.

Why am I interested in another Tikka stock, when the Roktok exists?

1) Availability. This stock arrived 2 months after the order page went live. 90 day lead time is quoted. I wouldn't bet against that, given my experience. With the volumes they're producing for Weatherby, there's obviously some pretty serious capacity in the shop.

2) Lighter weight. Rokstoks are in the 29-32 oz range. This un-railed Bastion was a shade over 24 oz. I'm not holding my breath for the RS Lite, though I'm sure it will be lovely when it arrives. Until then, there's a place in the market for a properly designed stock of a weight which is still shootable but frees up some ounces.

3) Made in Wyoming.

4) GW Magnus-style ergos. That is - a more mild interpretation of the modern shooting concepts driving the RS. I'm not turned off by the shark fin, but I'm curious to see what design decisions drive the majority of the recoil-control heavy lifting mechanics.

Fit and finish was excellent, with no discernible slop in the provided recoil lug.

The action fit into the inlet easily, indicating plenty of room for bedding. That's a good thing, since when there's room for bedding, there tends to be ... an advantage to bedding. It goes without saying there's now duct tape covering the antiquated sling swivels. I did ask to have them deleted, but that wasn't able to be accommodated. Rifle as seen, with empty plastic mag and Scythe attached, weighed in at a paltry 8 pounds 6 ounces.

Test plan:
-10 round groups without bedding
-Hunter drills shot back to back with RS, in triplicate
-Swap to 6.5, .243, or .308 to compare recoil characteristics
-Bed to one of the above larger cartridge actions, note group size delta
-Shoot NRL hunter match

What did the trigger to grip distance come out to be for the tikka?
They are very similar in reach, with the Bastion having a more substantial palm swell and a less slender wrist (which leads to a less vertical thumb angle). The RS trigger reach is 1.7" per specs. Some variation in my images due to lens angle and shoe position, but I'd say the Bastion is likely 1/10th" longer reach overall.

Shooters might prefer one over the other, but I don't anticipate serious bifurcation happening based on the grip section. Of course, the Bastion is not textured. By overlaying them with the trigger shoes lined up, you may get a better sense for exactly how similar the reaches are.

I'll also touch briefly on price- the Bastion is 800 painted, while a similarly appointed unrailed Tikka is $620 if memory serves.

I've had a rem700 sa bastion on order since Sept 4th. Getting close to the 90 days. It's going to be paired with a titanium/carbon barreled action, hoping for a true 6# bare rifle weight.

Did you consider the CF Echelon Versa given the weight target?

If this Bastion ends up needing to be bedded, there might be scarce reason to choose it over the CFEV, assuming no glaring ergo errors on the latter.

I’d be curious to hear how you think it compares to the Stocky’s VG? Weights are similar but it appears to have a longer forend, which I would prefer to help for balance with a sling.

I would actually prefer qd cups instead of sling swivels but that’s a different story.

Peak makes a good stock. I’ve been very happy with my blacktooth on a tikka. I’ll be picking up a bastion for sure to put on then 7mm prc build I have in progress.

Not a fan them ergos. It's very dang light tho! I'll know the weight the barreled action, trigger and bottom metal here shortly so I'll know where the stock needs land.

Curious as to why you went with the bastion instead of black tooth? I’m building a 6CM and have been eyeing the black tooth compared to the bastion to save about oz.

Despite a nostalgic fondness for my Wildcat, I really don't shoot swept grips well. I'm not unique in that regard. Most shooters, even those who tolerate swept grips, improve their performance with a more vertical grip w/ proper trigger reach.

I bought a blacktooth probably 2.5 months ago… right before they released the Bastion for tikka. Haven’t received it yet. I debated on trying to change the order, but also discovered the Echelon… I decided to wait until the blacktooth arrives and see how I feel about it since it will be replacing a stocky’s sporter style, which with how this rifle is set up, isn’t terrible; the comb could be slightly higher and I would like it better. So the blacktooth may work out, if it doesn’t, Echelon.

Then if that sucks, bastion I guess. The rifle in question is a light weight on purpose, so a Rostock doesn’t fit my parameters. Rostock lite… maybe depending on what it ends up weighing.

If lightweight is the goal, the black tooth is a great stock. The grip isn’t as swept back as most traditional sporters, but it’s sure not vertical. You may like it once you give it a shot.

When you get your black tooth if you don’t like it I’ll buy it from you.
