I'm still new to this forum and have done a lot of looking around and getting some awesome advice from everyone on here. I sure hope this isn't a stupid question. I just set up my pay pal account with my debit card. Now when you purchase stuff on here do you have to have your bank linked as well? I'm new to PayPal and I'm trying to figure it all out. Usually I use a credit card when buying online. Using my actual bank card has always worried me. My wife told me pay pal is a secure way to shop online. So she set us up with an account. I'm new to backpacking and I'm ready to start buying some things and this site seems to have anything and everything you'll ever need. Thank you in advance.

Don't worry about having it linked to accounts. I have been a Paypal member since 2004 and I have never had an issue with identity theft or issues with my accounts. I have had two disputes during that time and they helped refund my money on both occasions.
I do recommend not send money as a gift, ever, spring for the extra % so you have a little recourse if ever needed.

Tri2hunt thanks for the info. I'm just trying to get a better understand of PayPal. I really don't want to waste someone's time when I do go to buy something because I'm not prepared. Really appreciate your advice.

I've had PayPal linked to my bank account since 2004 and no problems. I suggest using 2 factor authentication as it helps protect your account. It will send you a text with a randomly generated number every time you log in; this makes sure that it is you and not someone who has somehow gotten a hold of your password. Also, you will also need a linked bank account to transfer money out of paypal in the case you sell something.

There are 2 ways to pay someone when purchasing on here: goods and services (charges the seller 3%, therefore most sellers ask you to add 3% for this option) and friends and family/gift (you must have a bank account linked to send free, otherwise it charges you the 3%). The advantage of goods and services is that it provides both the buyer and seller some level of protection for the transaction. You can file a dispute to get your money back, but this process favors the buyer as it is designed for businesses. Friends and family (aka gift), is meant for just that: sending someone money when you don't need any sort of protection.

Mot of the time I will use the free option if the user has a descent post count and/or has some positive feedback on the good guy thread. If it's a new member or I have any sort of bad feeling in the process I will pay the 3%. In some rare cases the seller wants the protection and will cover the 3%.

I have a completely separate bank account that is only used for Paypal. That's all they get access to.

I have it linked to my CC # only, feeling that's better protected as Cabelas( my card) has showed having my back a couple times. My bank account twice has had an unknown person try and remove funds, not that it was linked to PP but that caused me to worry....plus I'm all for gaining cabelas points.

Hate paypal,only got problems,it sucks but my account still doesnt work since 2013... trying to fix it but it was so a pain in the ass...its not 100% safe at all.

It depends. I trust most guys on here so I rarely pay the extra 3%. Ryan and Robby do a good job at keeping the troublemakers out. Ryan doesn't hesitate to get the ban hammer out when problems arise. It is only worth it to me for new users or suspicious deals.

Thank you everyone for your input. Really appreciate it. I guess I just gotta start buying some stuff and learn as I go. Having a credit card linked like handwerk said might be the best bet. Having my bank card just worries me. Again thanks for your guys input. Really love this site.

Paypal is a safe way to make purchases, and you can get your money back quickly if someone doesn't deliver the goods. You only have to "open a case", and the money will be refunded after they check it out. Just a word of caution, in the last year I have received two "Phishing e-mails" that were titled "Update you Paypal Account". It requested that I needed to update my information, and that I click the link provided to update my account info. I knew this was BS, and called Paypal. They told me that they will NEVER contact you to update any info, and asked me to forward the e-mails to their fraud dept, and gave me their e-mail address so I did.

The only problem with having it linked to your account IS the classifieds. I used to keep a little "stash" in PayPal for toys only. But damn the classifieds. I will say 99% of the transactions I've done are gift/family friends though. I figure a regular poster is "generally" trustworthy. It's your call, whatever you do don't put anything in the message that refers to firearms. You can't PayPal a rifle.


Or can you? Dunno. It was Volkswagen parts.


And between here, Snipers Hide, Accurate Reloading, 24HR, and Long Range Hunting I've had 1 bad transaction in the past 6 years. And I've bought and sold more than I want to know. Guy had some "factory" 375 H&H ammo that was clearly reloads. He said he didn't realize it, paid return shipping. No sweat. Guys generally just don't want to F-up the opportunity to get a deal every now and then.
