His is a Green Mountain. I also had a green mountain in 54 on a rifle. Outstanding shooter.

Every Green Mountain round ball barrel I ever shot would shoot lights out! If I was going to build the Kibler Hawken I would have to have a GM barrel.

I bought GM's last two remaining 42" 58 cal barrels and have a 36" 54cal waiting to go into a Hawken build unfortunately they're straight and I'm trying to find someone to mill them to a taper for a reasonable price. Unfortunately all I've received so far is No. I might have to get a couple large aggressive files and rig up a filing guide and do it myself. Lose 20 pounds in the process haha

Who have you tried? Have you tried any of the various fluting services? I wonder if Pro-Precision (aka boltfluter) might? He’s sometimes up for a challenge.

Various machine shops in the SLC area and a couple gunsmiths. One told me last year he could but his price may have been too high. Can't remember. Good point on the fluting service smiths. Those helical flat fluting styles make me think maybe they could if their machine is big enough. I'll check with boltfluter too

For a hunter at 100 yards, if you can keep it within 4" from a hunting situation rest, you're good. Off a bench, 2" or less. Just have to be realistic though.

I was talking about off of a good solid bench. I understand hunting conditions change everything. I haven’t shot a PRB since the late 70s early 80s. Been conical since. Have a chance to pick up a TC Renegade in .54 that I thought about buyig to shoot PRBs in. Just wondering what to expect.

What does “group” mean to you? Something silly like 3 random shots that sort of fell close together? Or real consistent groups that statistically mean anything- 10+ shot groups?

Yes- because that’s how statistical validity works….


Exactly as I thought. You aren’t shooting 2 MOA actual groups with PRB’s on demand or consistently. Guns shoot to a cone- all guns, including muzzleloaders, and that true come is not seen in 3 shots, or 5. Even 10 is only about 80-85% probability.

I posted more actual groups shot 100 yards with PRB’s in this thread alone than all the threads you can find in the internet combined.

Share all the pictures of those 2” groups with PRB’s from 100 yards please.


What I wrote is fact- it is specifically realistic. 3 sgots is a random event. Putting 3 random shots within 2 I che did each other- and ignoring all the other shots that didn’t land anywhere near those three shots- does not mean anything.

You’re not hitting 2 MOA targets at 100 yards consistently- that is say 80% or more of the time. Therefore, you aren’t shooting 2 MOA groups.

Because there's virtually no evidence of people's 100 yard shooting ability with patched round ball on the Internet, save the monthly postal matches that are usually 5 shots per target and 25-50 yards, I thought it would be fun to have that here. I'm guessing there won't be as many participants as the Tikka thread.

Show 10 round groups. 100 yards preferred, but 50 is fine if you're limited to it for whatever reason.

All shots count.

Any sight is fine, but state what type you're using.

Load specifics and gun may be interesting too.

For sake of argument since you are not interested in discussing/showing 10+ round groups lets say "realistically" only the first shot out of the gun matters. How often at the range are you firing the first shot out of the gun at 100yds and hitting within a 2" radius of the center of the target (Keeping within 4") from a hunting situation rest. Have you done this in varying conditions? What are the first round hit percentages?

A few years ago I took a target and took a shot with my hunt ready gun. Pulled that target and did my range time. Went home cleaned my gun and put it away. Next day to the range I loaded a hunt ready gun. At the range a first made one shot at the target from the first day out. I did this for 6 consecutive range days. This was done with a scoped inline muzzy that was capable of 1 MOA groups. My group off of a decent benched opened up to 2 3/4. Still very acceptable for my hunting application.

Did something similar as well. Would fire a clean cold bore shot at a target, then a second shot without cleaning the barrel to get a real life scenario of the accuracy in the field, plus to track the difference in the 1st and 2nd rounds. 10 targets over laid was around 2 3/4” at 100 yds.

This was a scoped knight disc .45, Parker BE, w/ bh209 shooting off a bench, so definitely a more accuracy oriented setup for a ML. I’d also had about 400 rounds, trying different combos, through the gun at that point and that was the best it had done hands down. Most other groups were 3-4” at 100yds when.
