Parasite - worms in deer meat.

It's not the first time I've found them, but after picking dozens of them out of some shanks I was browning, I finally tossed them. I've only ever found them in deer shanks. How about yourself?

I have never seen worms in Deer or elk meat in 4 decades.

You sure they weren’t cactus spines? Seen that a lot in the shanks of desert dwelling deer.

I'm not sure how to exactly put it into words but they were kind of wove around in a nickle size area just under that membrane outside the meat that's somewhat see through and between the layers of the shank. Not actually in the meat.

I've butched enough deer to forget how many and this is the 3rd time I've knowingly found them. Like I mentioned it's only in the shanks. It's gonna be while before I eat shanks again.

Those are just "meat worms" and they're harmless, although understandably gross. From what the biologist told me they're not uncommon and people just don't notice them usually. He said though they're called meat worms they're usually between muscle groups rather than actually being IN the meat. He said there's several variations but none are harmful to humans, even if you ate them alive. I have a pic of some I sent to the biologist, but Google photos isn't turning up anything for the search "worm" and I searched "meat" instead and now I'm hungry. Good Lord I've had some amazing meat pics and smoker/grill food over the years. If I can find it I'll post it.

Leg worms afflict a number of different animals, including humans (in Africa). Finding them in the legs of otters when skinning is fairly common. Like many parisites they are species specific.
