From NC as well. The best all around from east coast to west coast would be the Kuiu Katana's. Wore one pair for 16 days straight elk hunting. Wore the Outdoor vitals this year for 14 days and wasn't impressed. Katana's didn't bag out, held up great, stretch well and vent well and dry fast. Seem to shed green briar fairly well. I don't get into laurel much down my way. I can work in them when it's 95 and layer underneath when it cools off.
I've shredded a pair of Wrangler ATG's and a pair of the Outdoor Vitals making one trip each into a cut over to retrieve a deer....LIke trashed them. Sitka Ascents have faired a little better with the briars. Both pants are fine for what they are I guess. I kinda expected it from the ATG's but was fairly disappointed in the OV's but they weren't made for southern cutovers I suppose
The duck carhartt's will be better than the new "flex" pants for durability in briars, but the " rugged flex" will be better for climbing mountains. Both are going to bag out and stretch, take a while to dry and will be heavier.
I'm eyeballing the Kuiu prush pants to be honest. Hoping for the same benefits of fit and functionality like the Katana's with a little more protection.
it won't help your thighs much but if you can manage depending on temps i've found that wearing gaiters really helps prolong some of the life on pants.
They don't make them anymore but one of the toughest pants and most comfortable pants I've found was surprisingly the Ambush pant made my Nomad of all things. From turkeys, deer and elk those pants just keep on keeping on.
I don't know if there is a one size fits all when it comes to briars. It sucks spending money on good gear only to shred it to pieces with one trip into a cutover. If the briar gear can stop green and red briars in the SE chasing rabbits and other critters it isn't going to flex and will be hot and heavy.
