Great stuff guys, thanks for posting all the pics.
I did one or two like this a while ago, but remember disliking the feel of the paint on the stock. It would feel plasticy and cheap. Any have a similar experience? Do different paints have a different feel?

It's definitely been a while so I don't recall the specific brands/colors - the tan was an FDE and the gold was more of a metallic bronze. I bought a few cans and tested them out on some black buckets before I committed to actually applying it to the stock.

used a plastic walmart bag instead of a sponge.

Simple single color on a Stockys VG for a Howa mini. Original bare carbon was way too glossy.

Sponge and several coats of matte clear coat looked much better.

That looks great! Did you do a base layer and then a balled up bag dipped in paint?

Thanks! Pretty much, yes. Only instead of "dipping" it in paint, I sprayed the paint directly onto the balled up bag prior to dabbing.

light dusting of basecoat at the end helps dull the sharp edges/contrast of the dark colors

This is a method that I haven’t heard of before but the finished product looks excellent. I’ll have to try this the next time I paint a stock.

Thanks for all the inspirational pictures. I was thinking about doing this to my elk rifle but how does the paint hold up to scratches and such? I'm thinking of the deadfall or just dead pine tree branches. I guess it wouldn't be too hard to touch them up once in a while.

It looks better scratched up surprisingly.

My stock has some rub marks on it , from where it hits the pack frame . Adds character , LOL

One of the best clear coat finishes that I have applied over my stock paint jobs! Most other clear coats, even matte, comes out a tad glossy for my taste... I haven't personally worked with DuraCoat or Cerakote.

It’s a factory Remington stock that came with the 783 heavy barrel. Added the cheek riser
