Painless load development (mine)

I just use RCBS FL sizing dies, set up in the "normal" way I've seen prescribed. I thought simple dies like that were hard to mess up but I could be wrong

In May I started using the Derraco PCPS Primer Seater. It a pretty inexpensive way to easily set the primer depth and crush you want. The tool is amazingly consistent. Since I started using it my primers are all seated +/- .0005 from target. Whether that level of consistency makes any difference on target is debatable but it has tightened up my ES and SD numbers, It is also very easy to use and fast.

I'd be curious on how much the improvement is on a 30 shot group.
Still hand priming but I hear guys say these fancier primers help. But I've never seen anyone say by how much.

Primed 50 pieces last night with the versaprime. Set up easy and my girl hands won’t need carpal tunnel surgery now hopefully. I’ve done 200 pieces with hand primer in one sitting and I vowed not to do that again. I can’t see how it wouldn’t be more consistent than me using a hand primer but whether it makes any difference on target under 500 yards, I kinda doubt it if I’m pulling the trigger.

I agree it would be really hard to say without doing a comprehensive test. Previously I was using the basic RCBS lever bench primer. There is no control over seating depth with that other than feel, just like a basic hand primer. The PCPS is a good alternative, particularly if you have an extra press, due to its cost, ease of use and consistency. It does feel like my SD and ES are better across everything I have reloaded with it.

I'm using the PCPS and a digital micrometer depth gauge. I'm consistently seating primers within .0005 - .001 and shoot for .002 crush. Probably overkill for just hunting but my OCD gets the best of me sometimes. So many rabbit holes in this game....

I think first I need to upgrade from this unit.
80.7 is normally what it weighs my powder dish. But it keeps going from 80.7-80.8.
Not the end of the world and my groups and ES are still pretty dang good.
The Auto Trickler or the new Longshot that's coming out.

I have the Primal Rights CPS. One of the best investments in my reloading set up for sure.

If I hadn’t have bought that already, the Hornady seems good too from the couple minutes of messing with one at Scheels

Just getting started with the versa prime, but for what I think is about half the cost of the primal rights CPS, I think I’m going to be pretty happy with the Hornady.

anyone know if you can size up brass with just a mandrel (6.5 to 7) or do you need to run it through a full length die?
I might need to make 284 brass from 6.5-284 for a buddy.

Should just be able to expand it and load. Obviously better to do it in steps.

This reminds me, I have 100pcs of new Peterson 284 Win brass I'd be happy to sell and ship, if you want to go the easy route. DM me if your buddy is interested.
