In a situation where you’ve damaged or broken something, what is the recommend over the counter pain meds?

My original thought was ibuprofen but doesn’t that thin your blood which could be bad in a situation where there is bleeding?

Asprin thins the blood, not sure about ibuprofen.

For OTC meds, I look for a combo high dose ibuprofen/paracetamol because the two work together to give better relief than either on their own.
I find the relief when they start kicking in is noticeable.

Where I am, that's about as grunty as you can go without a doctor's prescription.

All NSAIDs increase bleeding risk, but they also increase clotting risk (fun). Well, aspirin doesn't increase clotting, but has a much larger increased bleeding risk.

I carry NSAIDs and Tylenol as separate medications. I would use the two together at maximal dosing if needed.

OTC Medications
Fever/pain reducers
Motrin/ibuprofen
Tylenol
Aleeve

Antihistamine
Benadryl(50ml by mouth if in anaphylactic shock)
Zyrtec
Allegra
Claratin
Tums
Imodium
Pepcid
Pepti bismol
Dayquil/nyquil
Sudafed
Mucinex
Cough drops
Sore throat spray

Miscellaneous
Aspirin
Excedrin
Anti-fungal cream
Hydrocortisone
Cold sore meds
Multi-vitamin, vitamin c
Muscle run ointment
Dramamine

If your interested in a the contents/dosage of a combat pill pack I can provide that as well.

You take all of that? I just take toilet paper, a bunch of ibuprofen and an old prescription bottle with whatever is left over from the last surgery I had.

I take a dozen or so Alieve pills in a baggy stashed in my first aid kit. I find Alieve takes slightly longer to start working but seems to last longer. By day two my neck pain form my bino harness causes a nasty headache so I take two then I am usually good the rest of the trip.

Nothing OTC will ever make it quit hurting enough for you to get around or hike with out assistance

Broke my ankle after I got back up and tried putting weight on it, I fainted

Exactly. I always have a dozen oxy / hydro in a zip lock bag with nighttime Advil and Imodium.

The real stuff is to get you off the mountain case you blow a joint or ligament.

I learned to despise narcotics after being on them for an exceptionally long time. I titrated myself off, eventually. I now only take narcotics for 3 days max and only if absolutely necessary (unfortunately, I know if they will be necessary). I typically ask for Toradol, a muscle relaxer and a steroid combination. Toradol is a strong but short lasting (3 days-ish) anti-inflammatory, the muscle relaxer does just that to your mind and body, the steroid assista and speeds healing.

Pain takes less medication if you stay ahead of it, i.e., take the medication before you need it, before it becomes painful. If you wait till you feel pain, the amount you'll need is exponential.

I've been told I have a very high pain tolerance. I think there is only slight truth to that. I think it really boils down to me prefering non-traditional methods over narcotics. From taking narcotics, I personally learned just how much they screw (I first chose a different word, then remembered this is a fsmily forum) up your thinking. I literally got to the point of being mentally numb and not caring about anything, including the mortgage payment (thank God for my wife).

My opinion of taking narcotics for a short term, not more than a week but preferably much less, is if you absolutely need them, okay. My second to last surgery (it was serious) my doctor wanted to give me a month's supply. I told him I would only take them for 3 days, he laughed, but we agreed on a 1 week prescription, I never called for a refill as he expected. My next surgery with him I told him I already had a 4 day supply leftover from the last surgery, and I didn't use all of that. But I did use a muscle relaxer for 2 to 3 days after stopping the narcotic. I'm not a tough guy when it comes to real pain, I just prefer healthier ways to deal with pain than narcotics. But, we all make are own choices.

Best wishes!

It really depends on the person and the injury. I've seen a 78 year old woman walk in with an ankle fractured in multiple places. Guy in the military ran 3 miles in sand after "spraining" his ankle on the O course, he had something like 5 different fractures when he was seen in medical after the run.

I make no claim to be tough, but I have been around tough people.

That said, nothing short of sedation will make it tolerable for most of use normal people to handle manipulation or load bearing on a broken bone.
