How many spare AA batteries should I be plan on packing with me assuming a 7 day hunt, a Garmin Oregon 600 GPS and Zebralight H52w AA headlamp?

depends on how you use the GPS and light (on/off time, constant use, etc),,,,,,I'd do a 7 day "test run" of using them like you figure you'd use them on the hunt,,,,,,,

me - one extra set would suffice for most hunts,,,,, I carry spares but seldom need to use them,,,,,,,

My spares are in my camera, or my GPS, or my flashlight.......etc. Whichever one I need the most will cannibalize the others if need be. My GPS will last all month of hunting because I don't leave it on all the time.....normally.

It all depends on how you use your GPS. If you constantly have it on and are using it you will have to change the batteries multiple times. If you rarely use it, you probably won't have to change your batteries.

This past winter I bought an Oregon 600. I took it out yesterday and used it from 6:30 AM - 12:30 PM. I marked about a dozen waypoints during that time and I have onXmaps, don't know if that chews up battery life or not. I had it on the entire time and I used 1/4th of the battery life.

My Oregon 600 eats batteries if you have to use it to navigate in the dark by using the backlight feature, so depends on your situation, batteries are cheap and light.

Hard to beat the new lithium AA batteries, last longer and they are lighter. Cost is still a little high but you can get a good deal from costco,Kirkland brand.

2 ea and be done with that stress. You'll likely not have to change them if they start fresh for 7 days. If it's cool or cold (environment) keep the unit in your jacket pocket somewhere near your body warmth...should be good to go. Most 12-day trips i do I rarely need the 2 spares, and temps range from 30s to 60s degrees F.

At certain points you'll have to trust the technology and cut down weight on spares...more than 2 batteries are overkill for a modern GPS, IMO.
