The first problem here is shooting deer that are outside the slot limit. If you’d shoot dinkier deer you wouldnt have that “gotta make the mount look good” problem!!

I quit dragging deer out several years ago after a particularly long and miserable 5hr drag! That was it. Since then, I've packed out several whitetails for myself, friends, and family... nearly all with various sizes of EXO packs. The 1800 is as capable as the larger ones. I prefer larger packs simply because it gives me more options. I've used other packs early on and was consistently disappointed with their performance at handling a long, deep woods pack out. Those packs were great tree stand packs, but the EXO's have proven they can do it all.

I’ve packed a few WT out with my Kuiu Icon Pro 1850.

Any pack with a minimum of 1900CI or bigger technically could pack out a whitetail, but it’s a spectrum as far as comfort with that load. Anything with just a flexible frame sheet will be petty uncomfortable under load. An external frame will be significantly more comfortable and I’ve found that a short external frame does not limit me in any way. Having a meat shelf definitely makes it easier. Kifaru makes the Stryker XL and Maniml for an external frame and shape charge and minikeg for internal. Mystery ranch pop up packs are a good in between with in between load carrying performance. EXO makes a 2200 pack that would also work well. There are a ton of options really, so narrow down what frame structure you want first.
