Do you guys pack a small saw to remove skull cap/antlers? I dont see a point to caping in the field if your gonna pack the skull out anyway unless your gonna do a skull mount.

No on the saw. I cut the antlers and upper jaw free from lower jaw, so the least amount of bone packed.

I'll be carrying a SOG Revolver 2.0 for my camp knife the saw is good for some lightweight basic sawing but I plan on keeping a Wyoming Saw in my truck. On the first load of meat coming out I'll bring the saw back w/me and cut the skullcap w/that if doing a Euro mount or something.

Bone will far outweigh the weight in a saw.

Chop that baby in front of the eye socket and leave it 4" thick so the taxi can get a good form match.

There was a thread like this a while back... seemed lots of guys carrying saws all blades and lightweight hacksaw blades.

Personally I carry a saw every where I go, it is great for cutting wood for fires, emergency shelters, and god knows what else.... I actually am surprised at how much I use the dang thing. Until this summer I carried the wyoming saw. It is an awesome saw, but between it and that big leather case it is very heavy to pack around.

I now carry the sawvivor with a bone and a wood blade in it. no need for cases as blades store in the unit. Very very light, very sturdy, and big enough that you are not spending an hour and taking off all the skin on your knuckles if you do have to cape/cap one.

I am sold

If shoulder mount, yes cape the hide for shoulder mount and take upper jaw with antlers.

I know the lower jaw weighs more than a light weight saw, but keeping the upper jaw is always useful for euro mount. I prefer to have the upper jaw in the event I want to euro or even I'd I don't. I like the look of the upper jaw attached if I have the antlers laying around also.

Just preference.

It is a good idea to remove the hide totally from the skull even if you don't have a saw to remove th skull plate because the skull/brains /eyes ect. will hold in heat. This will lead to the hair on the head/ face slipping. Granted this depends on the temp. and the amount of time the cape will remain on the skull. Personally regardless if I were doing a shoulder mount or euro I would detach the lower jaw and not pack it out because it is not needed. It is easy to do ( just start opening the mouth really wide and you will see what muscles are connecting it) and doesn't not require a saw.

I carry a gerber folding saw when elk hunting. Their heads are way too heavy to pack out whole! Plus it is nice for cutting some firewood if need be.

i picked up a 30" bow saw blade that ive been experimenting with.
the idea being the blade stores in a piece of pvc in my pack, weighs very little with 2 lynch pins and some cordage. from there i can make a large bow saw in the field with natural materials, still getting the details worked out, my first attempt worked but i did not like how i placed the pins. once ive got it ironed out, maybe i will throw a post up.

Wyoming saw for me. Maybe a little extra weight, but I do think hauling out the entire skull/top jaw is much more weight and cumbersome as compared to cutting the skull to haul out just the antlers.

Such a handy man ;-)

A cable saw was one of the best upgrades I've ever made, ok that may be an exaggeration, but it sure is better than packing a saw or hatchet and it fits in my kill kit

what ever this one is. ive been packing the same one for years and its still doing good. not real sure how to tell when it needs replaced, I guess ill know when the time comes. I can cut anything on a animal a standard saw can with this including skull caps. tell you the truth I like it better for the pelvis since your cutting from the inside out, no worries about hitting anything you don't want cut. pretty sure I got it at cabelas but its been years

littlebuf, have you had any problems with that one binding up? I've been looking for a saw, primarily for cutting wood for a stove, and read several reviews that talked about cable saws binding up when the "teeth" fill up with junk. I'm still on the fence trying to decide which one or style I want to get.

I haven't but I also havnet really cut much wood with it. pretty much used for breaking down critters. there lite enough to carry two and still be packing less than a traditional saw though. so you could do that maybe to try it out and have the comfort of a back up if you were one out.

Look into the "Unbelievable Saw". 5 oz. and gets great reviews for wood cutting without binding up...
