I'm just wondering, is your scale really accurate? I have several of the exact same items that you have but get different wts. than you. I use a digital scale that measures down to 0.5 grams and I've measured its accuracy against a triple beam scale and they are almost exactly the same. Most of the same gear we have is clothing, so obviously it could simply be a difference in size, but some things like Swaro spotter are the same. My spotter is the HD and I have the Swaro case on it. I haven't weighed it seperate from the case, because I always have the case on it, but it weighs 63 oz. Obviously the case adds to the wt., but I don't think the case weighs 15 ozs. Another example is, I have the KUIU Chugach NX jacket and pants. They weigh a total of 34.5 ozs. I can't remember the size but I think they're both large, I'm 5' 8" 160 lbs....Anyway, I thought it was interesting that our wts. are off on quite a few things.

Ak, I am not sure how accurate. My scale came with some brass weights to calibrate and it was bang on. I bought the jetboil flash the other day advertised at 14 oz and it came in at 15.6 on my scale. I don't always believe the manufacturers specs anyways.
I just did a quick check on my scope for advertised weight and it said 47.3 oz. that's close enough to 48 for me. If you have a chance I would like to see your scope weight and cover weight separately. Also weighted my iphone and it was bang on to advertised weight. My chugach is large in pants xl in jacket.
Let me know how it measures out. Thanks . Rob

Ak, I just ran down and weighed a few items again. The chugach pant weighed .5 oz heavier then pulled it off and weighed again and it was the same weight as before. The chugach jacket was actually 2 oz heavier than my previous weight. That would put the pant and jacket combo the same as your weight. I rolled them up a little tighter so nothing was hanging off, so that may have made the difference. I did weigh my spotter at exactly 48 oz. the weight of the HD may be slightly heavier I am not sure.
Overall I think it is close enough to give me a good idea of what I am carrying. Let me know how yours weighs out seperately. Thanks, rob.

Spotter as I take it into the field.

y4aje9e6.jpg

Minus case and quick release adapter.

y3emusus.jpg

Large Chugach NX jacket.

evuqy6ud.jpg

Large Chugach NX pants.

Not a great deal of difference, but a few ounces, and ounces at up to pounds, etc. etc. I just thought it was interesting.
Take care, Greg

Hey Timberghost, I've never been on a sheep hunt (so take this for what its worth) but compared your list to my backcountry list and came up with the following food for thought in addition to agreeing with some of the prior comments.

Many things in my list after years of upgrades are somewhat lighter options than yours (e.g. fire starting stuff, knife/sharpener, sleep gear, etc), but for that kind of a hunt I still end up being over 50 lbs total. Part of that I guess is the extra wt of the weapon I'm carrying, but I also saw some things that I like to carry that I didn't see on your list.

Some examples are: a bone blade if needed, short foam ridgerest pad for glassing and for air pad protection/backup, Bic lighter, water purification system, additional water carrying capacity/bladder, Food bag (like a 1 ounce Kifaru meat bag or two which has dual purposes, and with some ziplocs can allow you to break down those mylar bagged meals and not take all of the bulk...I do this even if it is not possible to hang my food), trash bags (looks like you have a dry bag for your pack and a tarp you could cover meat with and won't be cooling meat in a stream, so maybe not necessary), meat spices, toilet paper, a second light source (I use a 3 oz tactical light for night time route finding if needed and as a backup), satellite communicator like Delorme InReach, camera, tooth brush, toothpaste, chapstick/blister lube, map/compass, silicon seam grip and needle-thread instead of super glue for air pad/tent/rain gear/etc. repair.

Also, I would personally take 1/2 that much ironwire/spectra cord, squeeze some of the fluid out of the wet wipes, and do not bring the snare wire and Tipi/stove.

Greg, my spotter is a few years old now. So maybe that and the HD make the difference. I appreciate the comparisons. And I hear you on all the stuff adding up. Lol. Take care, rob.

Mike 7, thanks for looking at my list. I appreciate your thoughts. Definitely a few things that slipped my mind that I wanted to accumulate yet.
Delorme in reach and my iphone were not listed yet. Was thinking of adding a contractor grade garbage bag.
Snare wire is being deleted. Will drop some cordage as well.
I do have TP listed as mountain money. Lol
I am carrying two 3 liter bladders. I also have a light dry bag for stuffing the food into. I may only bring 2 mountain house in packages and ziplock the others. Not sure how much weight that will save?
We also have not gone over my partners list and weights. The stove and tipi will offset the rifle he will carry. He may be able to take a couple items to balance it out.
Thanks again for the input. Keep it together. Rob

I would bet that you have the 80mm and he is using the 65mm spotter. Hard to compare different sizes.

No, it's the 65mm objective. It is the HD so that could be the difference. Oh, it also has the standard 20-60x eye piece. I don't know if the eyepiece on Timberghost's is the same or not, but the 25-50x eyepiece is heavier anyway. Swarovski's website has my scope with the eyepiece listed at 47.2 oz. (almost 10 oz. lighter than what I come up with, that's over a half a pound for one single item). One thing I have noticed that seems to be across the board with all manufactures of just about everything (sporting goods related), is that the advertised wt's. are almost always lighter than the wt's. that I get. I don't think I've ever weighed anything that came up lighter on my scale that what the manufacture listed it as. If you have the ability to accurately weigh things , see if you don't find this to be true for the majority of your stuff.

Very odd. I've used a Swaro 65 HD STM quite a bit, and while I don't recall the weight it certainly wasn't anywhere near 57 oz. Do you have the ATS or the ATM?

Even if it was the heavier ATS version, I found this quote from a previous RS post:

The body of the ATS weighs in at 39.9 ounces with the 20x60 eyepiece weighing 9.6 ounces and the 25x50 eyepiece coming in at 10.4 ounces.

On my scale I find most things land pretty much right on spec for weight. Clothing, boots, and bags are off the most. The MH Ultralamina I got last week was a couple oz heavier than spec, but the older Ultralamina I have was 5 oz lighter than listed, so that was kind of a wash. The stoves, pots, optics have always been really close, with about an equal split between over/under.

Hey guys, just seperated my eyepiece and weighed it on a smaller scale good to only a pound and it came in at 9.7 oz. it is the 20-60 version.
Weighed the whole scope again and it was 3 pounds and .3 of an oz.
that sure is odd that your scope is 9 oz heavier.
Not sure how to explain it. Lol

So stupid question maybe. How do i tell if I have the STS or STM scope? Maybe mine is the magnesium model? Food for thought. Keep it together, rob

Timberghost, forget everything that I said. I'm an idiot, there I said it. I got home from work last night and pulled the eyepiece off and low and behold, I am the proud owner of a STM 80mm. When I purchased this scope used last year off ebay, it was listed as a STS 65mm. When I received it in the mail I just assumed that that's what it was and I never checked. This whole thread and Yellowknife's comments prompted me to check it out. So I guess we don't have the same scope after all. Sorry about all that confusion.:)

That's funny, Yellowknife made me a similar offer. Lol. I just told him that since I'd become so accustomed to lugging this heavy POS around, I figure I'll just go ahead and keep it. Hell, I barely even notice it in my back anymore.:)

Timberghost if you are hitting Cadomin in October I totally understand why you'd take the stove with the tipi. Is it Kifaru's aluminum or titanium oval? I just picked up one of Seek Outsides medium titanium stoves and I like the ease of assembling it, the tight fit, and the damper (I also own a med and large Kifaru aluminum stoves). I havent decided if I'm gonna take my Sawtooth or paratipi on my Stones hunt, but likely the Sawtooth cause it has a liner (lots of condensation in northern BC). There is something about having a dry and warm camp to come back to. For me its worth some extra weight because it enables me to hunt harder and longer. On the flip side I keep my weight down on my clothes. Clothes and food have always been what I use to bring too much of, but that has changed. I use 100% First Lite merino, outerwear, and rain system. It doesn't stink after a hard 10 day hunt (socks maybe a little), and its warm regardless how drenched i get. Smash a stud ram, take lots of pics!

Luke Moffat...I have enjoyed the blogs and stories of you and your wife's hunts. You are blessed to have your mate walk the hills with you. I am curious on your food kit for a 10 day backpacking hunt? I'm keeping my calorie intake per day around 2000 cals. Breakfast and dinners are routine, but really curious what you take for lunch (not just Luke, all y'all).
