Looking for a pack for my lab that hikes and shed hunts. It would be great to have pals webbing to interchange pockets from my own pack. Anyone see or make one?

I've only seen weak commercial ones, or custom made serious saddles. I've got the same question for dog backpacking

We put ruffwear packs on both our dogs. They work well, but neither of them are customizable with webbing.

I will tell you that our dogs have those packs soaked and muddy within the first 30 minutes of putting them on. There's no way you could convince me to share pockets with my lab unless you really like cleaning your backpack.

I didn’t think about that. Thanks.

We use the Ruffwear palisades and it works well for multi day trips. You have to really babalce the load well. It doesn't take much to lopside them. The great thing is the packs come off and you can use just the harness. I use the the harness all the time on day hikes pulling the dog over and down steep obstacles he can't clear.

I agree, I wouldn't want to share with my dog, he makes a mess of his pack in the mud and water. Also, I've found it's pretty important to balance out the weight in both sides of his pack. That's something else to consider when adding pockets, etc. to the pack. My dog's pack is a cheap one I picked up and have had to repair 3 times but it gets the job done, maybe some of the high end ones fit better and don't require as much weight balancing between the sizes?

Have the ruffwear as well, had it on my dog for the first trip recently. Others have mentioned keeping the loads balanced which is accurate. The pouches on either side actually expand quite a bit. Not much in terms of organization but I wouldn’t want to load my dog down with more than can fit in the pouches.

I do think their is plenty of room for advancing dog packs but the ruffwear seems like a solid choice for the money and materials seem pretty solid as well.

I think I would have my dog carry his own food. Not much weight at all. The ruffwares are nice.

RuffWear. it is a good dog pack. i bought a bright red one and had great visions of long wilderness trips with my dog. i did NOT anticipate my dog's disdain for all things horses. opps.
my dog is high energy. i started adding water to the pack on regular hikes just to add burden to tire that mutant out. the funniest by-product of the pack, he heels awesome with it on. i think he feels like it is work for him and he is all business. he does his job well. he is half labrador and half aussie shepherd. which is why he hates livestock i think.

Ruffwear approach for our mighty mutt..bit smaller than the palisades, but he,s s skinny lad.
White dog, orange pack, if there's s mud bog around and we,re not on high alert, he,s in to the shoulders quicker'n you can cuss..
Our,s is the same way, put the pack on him, and he gets a little pep in his step, almost a swagger. ' Cept if there's deep snow involved.
Then I get the dirty look, and he plunks down fairly often..

We have 2 hard years with the palisades pack, nothing but good things to say about it, it’s stood up very well. The water bladder pockets and removable bags are a couple great features.

I run the RW Approach on my lab and really like it, she carries her food , water depending on area and blanket on the way up , then all our garbage on the way down
