Pack animals ?

Donkeys rule!! I got a blm burro a few years ago. My goal is to have 2 eventually. He packed my bull out last year, just had to make 2 trips. I have had lots of fun working with him and I have no previous equine experience. He is my buddy, I take him for walks everyday I’m home like you would a dog

Did you get him from a TIP trainer or was he wild when you got him?

No matter what you get, the individual matters. If anyone in you family won't be OK rehoming the animal you get, buy a seasoned packer, some just don'thave the physical makeup or the personality for it.

I like my burro when he have someone to lead him solo, but he doesn't do well in my string of mules. I think 2 burros would be awesome.

I could tie him to a twig and he would just stand there. If he gets tangled in a lead line, he just sits and looks sad. He basically always looks sad, but looks a little extra sad.

Burros need patience and a certain type of training, but many are big puppy dogs. Pedro weighs #400s or so and carries #110 of gear great.

I had llamas previously, they are amazing but don't like you. Renting llamas is very worth it.

Llama guy here. Don't disagree with anybody on this thread and certainly would assert that most of it hinges on personal preference. I like llamas because they are pretty easy to deal with in camp, and don't take up too much of my hunting time. As a buddy of mine likes to remind me, "llamas are the pack animal for the guy that doesn't want to take care of pack animals."

Are they a little under-gunned packing big elk? Yes. Are they likely to cause serious injury from a kicking or falling accident? No. Do I wish my neighbors couldn't see them? Yes. Are there better options on there? Perhaps. Have they packed out more than a few animals and will I stick with them? Probably.
