PA hunter moving to Boise to chase a dream

The best rental rates can require calling a number of places that don’t advertise much or at all. I enjoyed living around bogus basin (road up to the ski area) and Camel Back park in the old part of town since mountain biking and running trails go way up the side of the mountain from there.
Yup i am currently calling around and getting estimates. Trying to find the best way, And okay i will keep that part of town in mind thanks!

Lol i did look into this (since i will def do it when eligible in Idaho). They only have something like that once you become a senior hunter (above the age of 65 I think)
Before you are no longer a resident of Pennsylvania, confirm if they have a lifetime license that you can buy that locks you in as a resident hunter forever. That’s how it is in my home state, which is awesome if I ever decide to leave.

Agree Boise is getting to liberal. Outside cities are much more my style. Boise does have more to do though as far as events and places to visit. What is your profession?
Im a civil engineer. I will be working downtown so thatll be a factor. Honestly I dont mind the city. I like connecting with people and "action" at least during this chapter of my life. As long as I can spend the weekends and a few weeks in September away in the mountains... I am all good lol

When I was young and single I moved around the country. Depending on how much stuff you have determines how you move. If you can get everything in a U-Haul truck and dolly your vehicle behind that worked best for me. A few times my company paid for a moving company but that didn't work out that great with hassles like lost or damaged items and late delivery. If you can take all your stuff with you will be less at risk for headaches.
Gotcha ok I will look into that. The company is helping me a bit but i am free to do it however i want

What kind of civil engineering?

Welcome to Idaho, I’m on my second and hopefully last run here. I’ve moved a round a bit for work and the one time I let a moving company handle the household it was a nightmare of delays and broken items. After that I just took the moving expense and did everything myself. From Lincoln NE I drove my truck pulling a U-Haul trailer then flew back picked up a big U-Haul and car dolly. Me and the wife had a slow relaxing trip lol. While my last kid living at home flew ahead of us. If you have the time. 7-8 hour drives a day plan stops uber to local bars and restaurants makes a fun roadtrip.

Be cautious of the people who tell you not to live near downtown. If you are working downtown, living anywhere to the west is going to be the worst commute. Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Star, Middleton, etc will be the “wrong way” for a commute. I know people who live in Nampa and Caldwell and commute downtown and it can be over an hour morning/evening commute. If you have the money I would strongly consider living East of the Boise Town Square Mall (East of Cole/Milwaukee/Glenwood/Gary Lane Streets). If you live in SE Boise for example you are looking at more like a 15 minute commute, and you are also out of town on I-84 (to the Snake River) or Highway 21 (to the central mountains) very quickly. Everybody has their preferences though!

You're living the dream! I'm from NEPA and hunt Idaho every other year when I can. If it wasn't for settling down with family I would have moved west. A family friend was stationed in Mountain Home with the Air Force in the late 80's and never called PA home again. He's one of the reasons I started hunting out west over 15 years ago. He's a draftsman working in Boise but like others have said the outlying areas are cheaper and less busy. He is actually looking to rent his home in Nampa since moving in with his mother to help take care of her. If you're looking for a local contact I can get you in touch. He's a single guy that does nothing but hunt, fish, and shoot guns lol.
