I was 7 when I first heard Diary of a madman. I borrowed the cassette from an older brother of one of my buddies. I had to sneak it in the house, so my mom wouldn't see it.
The intro to Diary of a madman started me off on an auditory journey that continues to this day and accusations from my mom about listening to that damn devil music.

I was about 7 when my friends and I would have air instrument/lip sync concerts in the basement to the Bark at the Moon album.

Even though Ozzy was known by EVERYONE most only know about certain phases of his career, or tidbits from being a part of culture. Overall he lived through so many phases of career, tribulations, and personal life its hard to ever know the entire story. Quite the ride for a poor kid from Birmingham

Black Sabbath was easily my favorite band of all time. The different genre's of metal music that was spawned from those boys from Birmingham still influences all of the music that I listen to today. Today is a sad, sad day for me but, I am so happy to watch them play (via youtube) them play a few weeks ago.

Tool's version of "Hand of Doom" is quite remarkable. That's been my favorite Black Sabbath song for years.

I concur. It's like they sang it as if it were their own song and not that they were covering it - if that makes sense. That was a powerful version.

I remember picking this album up as a 10-year old at the store and being literally terrified. I was heavy into KISS already, but this was on another level. Took me a few more years to figure it all out.

Listening to a lot of Ozzy today brings back a lot of great memories from the past 40+ years that I've been listening to his music. "Icon" and "Legend" can't adequately describe his place in metal.

Wasn’t a fan when younger, probably due to the dark marketing pitch. Came to appreciate his work later in life and enjoy it now. Never cared for the reality show either.

That's the thing, it's basically impossible to compare Black Sabbath to any other band.

There's so many influential bands and artists... But who else can really be pinpointed as the creator of an an entire genre, that spawned how many sub genres...

Ozzy and Black Sabbath didn't just change music. They reshaped the entire music landscape.

I mostly agree... But you can draw a pretty clear line from MC5 to The Stooges.

While i am saddened by the news, the thought of Ozzy re-joining Randy Rhoads, Randy Castillo and Lemmy makes me smile.
