I just joined here and need some posts so thought this would be a start.

Here is a bit about my California Bighorn ram I drew in Idaho. He's 10 years old. I had never been anywhere near the area I applied for nor did I know anyone who had hunted it. I scouted the area solo for 24 days during the summer mostly looking for access, vantage points and how to negotiate the canyons. It's wilderness so foot travel only. Rugged canyon country with 1000 foot sheer cliffs. Wild country that not many see. Claude Dallas hung out here if you've heard of him. Saw lots of very interesting sights. Here are a few photos you might enjoy. Thanks for looking!

Welcome and well done! Please keep posting as it’s clear you’re gonna have a lot to add to the forum too!

Great ram! Just looked up Claude Dallas - crazy story for sure. They found his pistol in 2008. Guys like that is why I ALWAYS carry in the backcountry. Never know who is out there trying not to be found and with bad intentions...

Saw lots of rams in the flats like antelope or coming up out of the draws. Some on the side hills and rock slides. The one I got was with eight others right in the bottom river bed. I heard them smack heads in the canyon so skirted the rim for a view. I shot down from the rim then it took three hours to find a route into the bottom, follow the river to the ram.
Saw 27 rams in two days hunting. One mountain lion and some chukars...and two skunks that tried dragging off my meat. Took some 4's from a Taurus Judge to persuade them not to return. Several rattlesnakes but they don't bother me.
Found one dead head of a 3 year old.
Saw really interesting old ruins of dwellings. Just really a fantastic experience.

Well, I had talked myself out of applying for Calis until I saw your pics.

Beautiful photos. Great story and fine Cali ram from special country. I've been in there a time or two. Middle Fork of the Owyhee, Indian Hot Springs/Cave Draw/Helfrich Hole/Cave Rapids, Sheep Creek where it joins the Bruneau, caves with tin cans filled with notes from the early Helfrich family rafting trips. Pictographs/Petroglyphs, old stills where the moonshine was made, old sheepherders camps with detritus/campfire stains up the cave walls from who knows how long ago. The Bruneau, Jarbridge, and Owyhee are special places, and with the right water levels, awesome whitewater rafting/kayaking and "Redband Rainbow" fishing. After the Unit 11 ram this past September, I'll look forward in the future to putting in for a Cali in the Owyhee or Jack Creek areas. Just watch out for the Poison Ivy...it's brutal and head-high and lines the banks for miles in some areas.
Best,
DWD

Congrats on a fine ram. I hunted there with Jon Barker about ten years ago. Kill was very similar. Heard them first. Shot across canyon. A little smaller than yours. Awesome country.
