Bow string

Thoughts on when you should change your bow string/cable out. I’ve had my bow for two years and shoot pretty consistently. Minimum two dozen arrows a week on the generous side. I only notice a little fraying around the peep sight. Definitely feel like I have lost some poundage but still shoots good.

They are probably fine but the bow should be retuned. I shoot enough that I go through more than one set a year and after hunting season they are usually ready to be replaced due to wear from being drug through the grass and branches. If you are looking for a material that lasts a long time while looking good, Bloodline VEC99 is the material I would consider. The fibers are coated with a material that holds up very well.

I've never changed them until they clearly needed it. Not because of cost, but because I've never been as happy after changing them (everything moves)
My current bow was new in 2020. I shoot nearly every day. I wax it religiously. I haven't moved my pins in years and it shoots great. I can't get myself to get new string just because.

If string is worn or not shooting/tuning good then look at swapping.

I usually replace factory strings after their first season.

Threadz, gas, JBK, catfish, and John’s custom archery all make fantastic strings.

I’d stay away from vec99. I’ve personally seen too many instances of peep and serving slip on them. They’re really pretty and waxless, but they’re slick.

Get a good set of some blend of BCY X material, and you’ll be good to go. On the replacing strings, most hunting bows get replaced from them getting beat up in the woods more often than actually being “shot out”. I replace my strings every year, but I run a small shop out of my garage. If I was paying the prices it costs to get someone to install them, it’d probably be every few years.

Another vote for replacing factory strings within a year. My last set stretched enough to drop from 82lb to 77 within 2000 arrows.
