Interesting perspective. I agree with you but if it weren't for the money that this site makes helping others kill animals, neither of us would be here. I don't care for it but the entire hunting industry has been monetized. Virtually nothing out there a person doesn't have to pay to shoot, just a matter of the cost and who is getting paid.

Holy $h!+ that's kinda an awesome idea.
Maybe you didn't mean it like that, but as someone who dabbles in tech and someone who dabbles in hunting, creating a model to do that would be a really fun project. The only people who would really be able to do it would be guides or OnX or someone with a super extensive dataset though.

Just a matter of where people draw the line. OnX sells a service that kills way more animals than will ever be impacted by an outfitter looking for one big one. All of you are happy pressing the easy button as long as it fits socially acceptable standards. Take away GPS and see what happens to draw odds, trophy quality, etc. Remove gohunt, outdoor forums. Etc... same effect. Otc good tags existed just a couple decades ago. Outfitters offered finders fees way back then... don't necessarily agree with them but they aren't the problem. Technology is and there is no putting it back in the bag.

OnX doesn’t kill any animals, they might make it slightly easier to find accessible land, but the hunter still has to go out and exert physical energy and use a skill set to kill animals. An auction tag buyer paying an outfitter, who then pays a finders fee for the biggest animal in the state is not what hunting should be about.

Head hunters, nothing more. There is a podcast I like to listen to, they had "Spook Spann" on there. Seemed like a nice dude, but man, he has over 20 200" whitetails and his method of getting on them was simply throwing cash at them. Where they were in the country was of no matter.

Unless onX mines waypoints labeled as "kill site" or "elk down" I don't see how that would really help a premiere type of service that uses existing subscriber's data. Maybe it could help show areas with a lot of hunting pressure? But if you are worried start naming your waypoints more cryptically like "crap taken here" etc.

What I think could absolutely be used for evil is if onx had camera permission from your phone and knew exactly where you took the picture of a big buck or where you killed something. I think they already offer a service that can link certain trailcams to your app, so I would imagine they can already potentially see all the trail cam photos and locations of those that subscribe to that service.

I do!! I just drop a pin and don't name it. I also don't often assign a color or specific pin "picture "

Even I can't decode most of them! ....its usually done with the "I'll name it later" or "There's no way I'll forget why i marked that spot" approach. Brilliant!

Right. Label your waypoints less obviously.

What I was trying to say is if there is ever a feature that allows you to take a photo while using the app in order to save that photo and its location as a waypoint I would not use that. Like I said there is already a service they provide for trail camera photos and locations so this isn't that far fetched of an idea.

This doesn't bother me. If just shooting a big a world class animal is all you care about, you can buy that shot. What you can't buy is the satisfaction of finding it and killing it yourself. Anyone can shoot a rifle. They might as well go to a deer farm and pick one out. I guess they wouldn't get their name in the record book that way.

Most of this is being done on units that are very hard to draw, at least in Utah.

I dont like it but I dont blame people for taking the money. I knew where a really good bull was a couple years ago. I didnt draw an elk tag nor did I have a shot at drawing it for another 10-12 years unless I got extremely lucky. If someone would have offered me 1000 bucks for a pin, I wouldnt have taken it on principle but I will not say that I wouldnt have been tempted.

This is something that is odd to me as well. I have a little notepad and mark my waypoints as 1,2,3 etc and make a note in my book as to what it represents. I guess it's just habit from the old gps days and paper maps that you didn't want to scribble all over.

Just had a discussion with an outfitter in a highly sought after trophy area that is steadily going downhill. The pressure put on our best public animals is absurd and the top keeps getting creamed off a little more every year. It’s not just the outfitters, its the the services (hunting fool, EPIC etc…) and large groups teaming up on glassing when someone draws a trophy tag in the group. The animals don’t stand a chance.
