Honestly if I was a hunter who had that tag why not just cut the guide out of the equation. A guide is meant to put you on game not pay for people’s spots.

Just a matter of where people draw the line. OnX sells a service that kills way more animals than will ever be impacted by an outfitter looking for one big one. All of you are happy pressing the easy button as long as it fits socially acceptable standards. Take away GPS and see what happens to draw odds, trophy quality, etc. Remove gohunt, outdoor forums. Etc... same effect. Otc good tags existed just a couple decades ago. Outfitters offered finders fees way back then... don't necessarily agree with them but they aren't the problem. Technology is and there is no putting it back in the bag.

We are at a crux between capitalism and the North American conservation model.

Capitalism will win. I’m just not on the right side of that one. Nor do I fully agree with it.

Not capitalism, human nature. It's not capitalism that ruins things, it's people's inability to restrain themselves from doing things that are legally permissible, but morally/ethically questionable. It's the same old argument of, "Well, as long as it's legal it must be fine." No. Laws describe the lowest expected behavior from a person, not the highest/most ethical. It's the tragedy of the commons yet again, which is driven by the failings of human nature.

Not saying I like it bit isn't an outfitter paying people for info the same as him paying 10 guides to go out and search for a trophy for a high paying customer?

No it's not the same as this throws a much much bigger net to catch the biggest fish.

It's been happening on utahs limited entry units for a long time, everyone fancys themselves as part of Mossbacks crew.

I need to become a politician, become wealthy from my fellow American peasants, and then go hire a guide to find me the biggest bull elk and let everyone lesser than me that I'm superior due to my money and power.

Yes, I do know that the guy who is hiring this outfitter isn't known. This was more of a opinion.

So someone gets paid for a big animal and the animal dies.

Or someone poaches the big animal and the animal dies.

At least some young guy can make some money and the animal is killed legally.

Rather this guy kill a animal versus a certain paid poacher do it instead.

Everything hunting related doesn't have to be about making a dollar from the animal being killed.

Truth, it's the fact the consumer (we in general) have made it that way sadly. I would say it's gotten worse in the last 15ish years.

Seems like a mighty big assumption that the big deer will get poached.

Going to have to use this thought process if I ever shoot a two point. “Well, had to shoot him. Would have hated for him to get big and someone poach him. Just doing my duty.”

Dang. I'm curious on something now.

@mtwarden, what was the average size/sex of poached animals of guys you dealt with?

I’m dense so I guess I don’t know what you mean.

You are a mod on a website that makes money off of hunting. Should the owners donate every cent they make above the operating costs? Or is it fine if they make money off of hunting?

Kind of a joke. I’ll try to put a winky face or something like that in my next sarcastic post. I do believe a lot more big animals get poached than people realize though.

That would actually be a great separate thread. How many animals are poached and how many of the poached animals are big?
