Outfitter Shenanigans

I was just talking to a buddy in Oregon ...........and I've seen some craziness from these Outfitters that think they own the Pubic Forest...but his was a doozie. We had an outfitter guiding in a Wyoming Wilderness harass us...and claim to the GW that we stole his horses....his wrangler didn't pen them well and they got loose in a windstorm...heck, we had too many of our own hay burners to deal with on that trip to worry about someone else.

My buddy tells me his friend drew the Utah San Juan archery tag and he and his Uncle were driving up to a spot they had located a big bull....and the outfitter- you will all know the name- had a couple of his guys blocking access on the road in with their pickups in on National Forest ground. WTF.

The uncle went of on the guides when they wouldn't move their pickups and told them he was going to push their trucks off the cliff if they didn't move them in short order....among other things.

The guides moved their trucks...and the guys went up and sure enough killed that bull - over 400"er.

What brought this up was us talking about the problems with outfitters on some of the units in Nevada as my buddies buddy is F&G there.....some craziness there of hunters tires spiked....etc....and the Game dept knows all about it.

Sheep mountain talked some rancher here rite by me into letting them guide their hunter onto a buck children could hand feed.

There have been Mossback "guides" knocked out for trying that road blocking nonsense. Not enough of them unfortunately.

It always amazes me on the various different governors tags when an army of guides are out every day keeping tabs on animals for the lucky recipient for months. If I ever had the wherewithal to win a governors tag I can say emphatically without hesitation that it would be a diy hunt where my very few close hunting buddies would be my guide.

It’s also a shame that AZ is outlawing game cameras. It’s like an epidemic with guides over there setting hundreds and hundreds of trail cams. The bad part about that is the average joe public land hunter who maybe has a couple trail cams set out every year is being penalized because of outfitter abuse

If I ever had the wherewithal to win a governors tag I can say emphatically without hesitation that it would be a diy hunt where my very few close hunting buddies would be my guide.

Trophy, not implying anything, but these days, this can be just as bad as outfitters! Guys with "friends" glassing from every corner, radios, etc. Special draw tags and the army of friends that accompany in the West these days has also gotten out of hand.

Ha as a solo hunter I prefer to operate alone most of the time. My army of friends scouting might consist of 2 other guys on occasion. Weekend warrior style but I do enjoy scouting with my very few hunting buddies when our schedules align

Had an outfighting land owner in WY call in Game and Fish falsely claiming that we tresspassed and wounded a cow on his property. We never set foot on their land. We never wounded a cow elk.

I witnessed them using pick up trucks blocking escape routes at the top of the basin and hands on horses herding elk out of the canyon into the basin.

It certainly seemed purposeful that they would drive sports through the BLM area we were hunting during prime hunting time to disrupt our hunts. As well as trespassing on my buddy’s family’s ground


With a CO present, the owner tresspassed onto my buddy’s family’s property to threaten us if we were to be found on his land.

My view of him is so low that I am convinced that they purposely wounded that cow elk to try to set us up.

There was a very large shed that was resting on the ground just on the other side of the fence near where we would set up camp. A trail camera was directed at the fence line.

We don’t tresspass. We would not steal a shed off someone’s property. I can understand wanting to preserve the sanctity of property. I can even understand setting up a trail cam to cover a “bait” shed.

But after several really chitty interactions and my suspicion that they’d purposefully wound a cow elk in an attempt to falsely set us up, we made sure to walk the extra couple of hundred yards to piss near the fence line in front of the camera. Made sure that the stream never tresspassed and smiled, hoping the several dozen “Dick Pics” with no violations or encroachment would be a little more frustrating.

Are these the same mossback guys that went on to Kifaru cast and talked about how great of a group of guides they had? Oh and how they would never do something like block or road!

I've had outfitters block the trail I was riding on, then bumped his horse into mine. It was steep on the downhill side.

Ride through my camp on his horse while cussing at us. Trying to tell us how to run our camp and what to do with our horses.

Lied to me about the trail being blocked and how many hunters there were and where they were at.

Had them threaten and challenge me to a fight in front of clients.


That outfit is ran by decent dudes now that are very nice and polite. Haven't had an issue since the late 2000s.

We had an outfitter in Wyoming harassing us one year. He had a bunch of his horses run off in a big windstorm and he told the game warden that we stole his horses.

The game warden rode into our camp and told us obviously you have enough of your own hay burners to worry about....He knew that outfitter was sketchy. He told us of many complaints against the guy acting like he owns the national forest.
