I guided up there for 18 years but have since moved to MT. My old outfit is no more but I will tell you, the lone ridge guys are a great bunch and do really well. I would also recommend sundown outfitters they are friends of mine and also a good bunch.Anybody have any experience with the outfitters in 76? Have been looking at Frazier and Long Ridge Outfitters. Does anyone have experience with either or anyone else?
Hello tkrhuntsman, I drew a 4th rifle license for 76 this year. Fairly new to elk hunting and wondering if you could provide any info on what conditions you typically encountered that late in the season? I've been in the area a number of times over the years, mostly fishing and have backpacked some good sections in the weminuche however more in the vallecito / pinos river areas. Live up north about 2 hours in the Sangres so will have some chances to scout the area between now and late November. Any input appreciated.I guided up there for 18 years but have since moved to MT. Welcome to Rokslide. You should take an opportunity to look around a bit and you'll find this community is pretty awesome.Hello tkrhuntsman, I drew a 4th rifle license for 76 this year. I was there 4th rifle. I actually did not see any bulls last year, which, being that it was a cow hunt, was fine with me. I did talk to two separate groups that had run into some bulls in the burn area. If you were hunting during an early season bull hunt, yes I'd imagine your best bet would be packing into the Weminuche wilderness, as the wilderness area is a big portion of the unit to the south. One of my friends burned a bunch of points for an early season muzzleloader hunt and they traveled into the Weminuche. That aside, there was about a foot of snow on the ground once we got up to around 9-10K elevation, and lots of traffic / sign that the animals were traveling well below that elevation gradient, so we did not feel it was necessary to use any of the wilderness access trails given the conditions.Nice, @HuntGath how were the quality of bulls based on what you saw last year? What season where you there? Packer/horses needed or can you do it with daytrips in with UTV's/quads, etc?
