I’ve done a few out of state hunts and I always feel the hardest part is picking where to hunt when you don’t have a chance to physical scout areas before hunting. Any tips or tricks you guys using when picking an area?

I start with looking at the management units I can get into, which had the highest success rates...select. Then a lot of time on your favorite map app. Don't underestimate true elevation change that topos can seem to convince aren't so bad. Call the management/manger for the area and just ask if they can make recommendations.

I look for the largest chunk of public land with the fewest amount roads going through it. Then I find at least two more spots within an hour drive so I have options A,B and C if things don’t work out in the first spot or if my e-scouting didn’t pan out like I hoped on my top spot.

I love hunting different units as much as I love to hunt same units. I will study topo maps, GE maps, OnX maps etc til I’m blue in the face during the off season. Then I bounce my ideas off a guy who I have no doubt can go to any state and kill elk because of his map study prowess, and knowing elk. Then I go try and kill an elk 🏹🏹🏹🏹
