OTM vs TMK

I happened to already have several boxes of sierra OTM in 6.5cm and .308. I think i have seen OTM talked about not being as reliable on deer as the TMK, but i could not find the info to verify. Are they good to go or should i keep them for steel plates?

“OTM” is a generic designation that just means an open tip match bullet. There are tons of OTM’s from multiple makers. The SMK is a specific model from Sierra.

Berger VLD’s and Sierra SMK’s are both OTM’s, yet behave very differently in tissue.



Older model of SMK’s (non pointed or closed nose) do ok in tissue, though they are variable.

I think i read the OTM would not expand reliably, especially if the tip got filled up with something before hitting flesh thats 70% water.
Is that correct?

It all depends.

Those will all generally work ok. They will be a bit variable in wound channel, but generally kill fine.
