Oryx shoulder mount

My wife and I were extremely blessed to have both drawn our one in a lifetime Oryx tags this year. I’m looking for input on others experience with finding a taxidermist for a shoulder mount. Is there anyone local to WSMR that anyone recommends?(within 4-6 hours) Is there anyone you don’t recommend? I’m prepared to drive further if I have to. Thanks in advance

I used Major Wildlife Studio in Las Cruces for my son’s oryx. They did good work. It took about 15 months to complete the mount.

Any good taxidermist is quite capable of doing a good commercial mount. There's nothing really special about an oryx's anatomy that is "tribal knowledge" to do a nice looking mount. Expect close to $1200 each.

I've been very happy with turn-around-time and quality.
I've a hard left wall pedestal, fly swatter, and tanned back half.

The meat processor(s) outside the gate are handy, with a rig that can lift a whole animal for skinning. Leave lots of extra hide on the back so your taxidermist can choose where to trim to.

There was also a taxidermist at the gate when I arrived. Wasn't there when we came off base.

There will be a taxidermist at the gate with a trailer displaying shoulder and euro mounts. He does a brisk business and the price was reasonable as I recall.

I did this hunt a couple of years ago and sat down with Gilbert and recorded a couple hour long DIY guide on the experience. Truly one of my most unique hunts.

Same, the Barbery sheep in my icon was done by Major's.

Takes about 12-18 months. Quality is excellent.

Recommendations for both Major and Carl(mountain Legends) both artists but two different style shops. Carl’s is a small shop with his brother and maybe another hand. Roberts shop is a big with specialists, some guys just doing finish work some just on habitat, etc. I’m sitting here looking at 5 mounts that Carl has done and they are awesome. All of the trophies our clients take we send to Robert. You can’t go wrong with either one and both are super nice guys. Congrats and good luck on your hunts!

There were butchers and taxi at Tuley Gate (Rhodes Cyn) when I was out there recently.

Here’s mine I did for competition a few years ago. Lots of good taxidermist’s in NM. Just look at their mounts. Call them and ask all your questions and see if they doing any competition. Usually commercial mounts aren’t as in depth as competition but we usually add some things in there. Alamogordo, Albuquerque, Belen/Los Lunas, Taos, Las Cruces, etc. closest would be Belen/Los Lunas, Alamogordo, and Las Cruces.

There is a wild game butcher on the corner of 54 highway and the road to Cloudcroft. He sells she-sheds.

Here’s mine I did for competition a few years ago. ...

That "hard left" is a little more nose-up-y than mine. Appropriate for a pedestal. I imagine it was a conscious choice to keep the horns ... natural ... rather than cleaning to black. One more detail to consider. Ever consider having the ears rotated away from front?

I added some oils to the horns before competition so they were more “black”. Also, the ears aren’t forward. They are more straight out with just a slight forward rotation. The natural look of an animal is usually with a slight forward rotation. Not by much though. They can move their ears all sorts of ways of course but natural/relaxed is straight out with a slight forward look. I’ve mounted a ton of animals over the years but this was my personal competition piece.

Oryx make pretty good european mounts as well. Much better european than antelope or most deer.
You get those big ears and eyes off the skull it makes the horns look that much bigger. That and mounting the skull parallel to the wall vs at a 45 to the wall- visually makes the horns seem few inches longer than they actually are. I dont think you get that optical trick out of most other game.
