Origin vs Solus

Hello All,

Now that this Solus has been around for a few I wanted to get some feedback. I have 2 Origin prefit barrels and only one action. I do some NRL Hunter with a 6.5 creed and I hunt with a 7 SAUM. I don’t really have a single gripe about my origin other than needing to notch the feedramp for the longer coals (something that have since started doing I believe). So what say you on these two. I’m going to pick up another action, just don’t know which one?

Thanks

The Solus is pretty heavy but I haven’t used one.

I think @wind gypsy has

I just fingerbanged one for a while at a match that a guy in my squad had. I was very surprised by how slick it ran and how light the bolt lift was for a price point 3 lug/60 degree action. Enough to prove one sample felt nice, it seems they might not all be that way though?

I'd give the lightweight version a try if I stopped ending up with more tikkas some day..

I just ordered a Solus...I used to seen them as low as $650 but I think $725 is where they're going to be priced on sale. The lightweight version is currently only available in Long Action but the last few days a lot has been added to their site so it could be available again soon.

I've only fondled 1 and liked the 60 degree throw, how slick it was compared to my factory actions, and the ability to swap bolt heads (which is also available with the Origin). It's heavy but cannot comment on it vs the Origin.

I have no argument over why I chose Solus over buying an Origin or Tikka and stripping it for basically the same price (possibly lower) except that I got a 6CM barrel from Aero for less than $200 though I probably would have went a bit more niche with a cartridge choice had I ordered a barrel.

I've got a Solus in 6CM with about 150 rounds through it. It runs well and the light, short throw of the bolt makes it fast and smooth to use. Bolt slides well but I haven't had it in any dirt, rain or ice yet. I like it enough there is a second action sitting on my desk at the moment waiting on the remainder of the build to show up.

So… for a hunting rifle what economical barrel would you all choose? Looking at 6 creed or 25 creed. Also, any idea if standard Solus setup would have troubles with srp brass, read there can be issues? Never done a rifle build

If weight wasn’t too much for a particular use I’d get a barreled action from pva with the brux #4 contour.

Got to play with the standard Solus short action yesterday. That sucker was smooth. Wish they’d figure out how to make it about 6oz lighter.

Good catch. I meant a way to make the Solus lightweight 6oz lighter. It’s still heavier than a tikka action.
Ahh gotcha, I misunderstood. I agree even the lighweight is still heavier than other actions out there or the same as some regular weight options

Having owned both the origin wins hands down in every aspect. I wanted to love the solus but when my 22 creed had feeding issues with it I sent it down the road. It did feed well with my 7 saum barrel

Second Origin is inbound. Switching the bolt face is easy button for having multiple barrel options.

I have several origins, and have(had) 2 solus. Origins have been great, I have a early one from 2017 that I had to re-shpe the feed lips to allow me to use 2.97" internal aics mags.

One solus received a 6br orgin barrel, spun it on, did a lil load dev got sub half min 10 shot groups at 400y with 107smk/varget, ran like a champ with aw mags HRD kits installed. Put it into a bravo, and gave it to my nephew as a Christmas/graduation gift. The other is gonna get a 21in lt palma 6gt. This will likely be a truck beater rig. The bolt lift forces are higher due to short lift angle. I don't care for dual ejectors, so shortened springs to reduce pressure. Installed longer a419 bolt nobs to reduce bolt lift forces. The actions are relatively smooth, some binding but no worse than the origin. I greatly prefer the integral lug/rail. The origin can run tl3 prefits by utilizing the HLR recoil lug, can be handy for some. The crf feature is nice on the origin, but not essential for reliable operating.

At this point, I have built five Solus actions. Two of the lightweight and three of the standard actions. I have built them in 6 Creed, 6.5 Creed, and 6.5 PRC. I also mainly hunt but enjoy a couple of NRL matches throughout the off season to stay sharp. I couldn't complain one bit about these actions. Yes, the standard ones a bit heavy but they feed and operate flawlessly in my experience. With plenty of room to seat bullets in my PRC out to mag length. I definitely prefer the lightweight action to save a little weight but wouldn't pass up on a good deal for a standard.

Saying that, as a forewarning, Aero has fell off the map here recently. Whatever you do, do not order from their website. Order through a dealer. You will never receive anything from Aero. I ended up having to contact my credit card company and dispute the charge for two actions that I ordered and never received.

All that being said, I'm looking at picking up my 6th Solus action currently because I have fell in love with them. I don't think I could justify the extra cost for another action with how well these operate. I'm currently trying to see if I can fit a 300 PRC in one of their long actions:giggle:

Standby and throw up some pics of groups and different configurations I have had them in. I have used barrels from Ballistic Advantage, Aero, and Straight Jacket Armory. (Ballistic Advantage makes Aero's barrels) Haven't had one shoot bad yet.

Solus has been great for me. Actually should be receiving an origin here soon to compare because I didn't want to wait on a lw solus to come in stock.

I have both and like both. I like the 60 degree bolt throw and the integrated rail and recoil lug of the Solus and I like the CRF and lighter weight of the Origin. Aero Precision customer service is non existent.

John

One the advantages of the origin, the bolt rides on raceways. The solus uses the bolt stop running in a groove on the bolt body to keep bolt aligned. The solus will bind a lot easier than the origin in my experience. I have 6 zermatts in the safe, and done 3 solus builds.
