Oregon Roosevelt vs. Oregon Mule

Hi guys,

I live near the coast range and own 33 acres.
Including my neighbors it’s about 100.
I also soon will have access to about 575 of Stimson land connected via a neighbor. That changes everything.

Anyways, I started chasing bulls 2 seasons ago with a bow and am looking forward to putting it all together - and not being stuck on my small patch.

I just drew a buck deer archery tag 154R for the Mt. Emily / Walla Walla / Wenaha units. I know these are killer elk spots.

My question is - am I crazy to leave bugling bulls in the coast to go chase bucks that aren’t in rut out east?

An adventure in eastern Oregon sounds like a blast and I’d like to try spot n stalk mule deer, but… it’s SEPTEMBER!

I grew up in Oregon and would put elk on the back burner for that tag. There's some great bucks in the area.
If you can swing a couple trips to scout ahead of the hunt it would be helpful. Bring a decent spotting scope, and a glassing partner.

The Walla Walla unit has some great bucks, look up Government mountain road. Quite a few white tailed as well.
Wenaha is decent, look in the breaks of the Grande Rhonde.
I see more deer in Mt. Emily, if you go there focus on the east slope, as close to private as you can get.
The wife would like to see them all dead as they play hell with the garden and landscaping.

If it was a zero point tag, I believe I’d stay on the coast. A lot of the Mt Emily bucks are killed on private land. I can’t speak for the Wenaha and Walla Walla. Good luck!

Yes, zero points used. I got lucky I guess.

looked into the tag numbers a bit more. You can draw that tag with zero points all day long. 167 people chose that as a first choice tag out of 440 available tags. Make of that what you will. I’d still stick with the coastal elk hunt. Let us know how it goes.
