Oregon preference point creep

Does anyone have factual information about Oregons point creep specifically for elk?
I’m trying to research it more and asking for help! Thanks in advance.

What exactly do you want to know?

Any odds/predictions etc are based on who actually applied first choice.

There is no way to predict when high point holders that have never actually applied before suddenly jump in and apply.

But I can tell you there have been thousands of preference points sold.

Based on the trends Ive been watching it takes 3 years to get thru the people that have actually been applying at any point level.

It’s sad and frustrating knowing that there are tags my daughters will never draw because they have no chance of catching up unless something changes with the point system.

I think the most drastic creep you'll see is for the Big 3 units and possibly for a few others that had bigger quality (6 point) populations.

You could be a Washington resident and have 25+ points and still not draw. I read a thread on Hunt Washington forum, and a guy drew a wenaha west tag with 27 points. Big fire ripped through (50,000+ acres) and he turned his tag in. He didn't draw again until he had 34 points.

I have 4 elk and deer points in Oregon at the moment. It's not worth it for me to try to get 20+ as a non resident; I have 100% odds next year with 5 points for multiple muzzy deer tags. I wanna hunt, so I might as well cash em in and go hunt my butt off instead of waiting to draw a better tag later.

Get GoHunt insider or Huntin' Fool and look at real odds and plan accordingly. Escout like crazy and then get boots on the ground and go hunting for a week straight.

There’s always the 25% pool, that being said you can hunt other units every couple years, and probably kill a bigger bull over the hunts than one of the big three. I wish I would’ve done 6 rifle hunts instead of waiting 22 years like I did.

Still killed plenty of elk during that time, but knowing what I know now I could’ve killed some really nice bulls in non top tier units.

I was in the same boat. I spent 20 points on one of the big 3 units. I killed my share of elk on general season tags while waiting, but missed out on some awesome hunts in lower point units. If I could do it over again I’d play my cards differently.

My wife drew her first pronghorn tag last year in the random, but so far my luck in the random pool has been less than stellar lol. Maybe my girls will inherit her luck.

They aren’t concerned with drawing top tier units so it’s likely a non-issue for them. I just wish there was a better system, though I don’t pretend to know what the best system is.

The real shame about Oregon is how they treat non residents in the draw. 5% is already half as much as most western states, then they cut that 5% in half and give those tags to outfitters. 2.5% is BS in my opinion when they charge nearly $200 for the license just to put in

Yup it’s so dumb, but Oregon is ran by morons so it’s not a suprise..
