OR Backcountry Organizer vs pullouts

Working on building out my first real pack, an exo 2000.

I like organization and have a selection of pullouts, mesh bags, etc. Some from Kifaru, Granite Gear, etc. I also have a couple backcountry organizers, in small and medium.

They are kind of heavy compared to pull outs and I'm challenged in seeing the advantage.

I am new when it comes to packing a pack and know it is very personal.

For those that use the back country organizers or similar, how do you use them that is better than a pullout and worth the extra weight and cost?

Thanks

I keep an OR backcountry organizer in the lid of my Exo 3500 for smaller items like truck key, licenses, a few zip ties, lens wipes, med kit, lighter, fire starter, super glue, tenacious tape strips, toothbrush and toothpaste, sd cards and reader, backup headlamp, maybe a few other items. Pullouts are in the main bag for kill kit, food and cook gear.

Thanks for sharing how you use it.

I should add that I can return the medium one I have so I'm trying to decide if I should. I have a small too that I can't return.

I like the key idea, plus some basic med supplies outside of the main med kit. Also could be good for backup battery for phone and spare batteries for gps/light.

i've never liked a ton of little pockets and specific places to keep things. i find i spend more time trying to figure out which pocket it's in rather than just opening up the bag and just digging through. this applies to packs as well as possbiles bags for me.

I like my organizer. Have a large and small.

Different tool IMO. I use pull outs for somethings. Kill kits. Spare batteries and music stuff I don’t mind rolling around. I my large organizer for small stuff I like to have presented a little more easily. Bow and gun repair, some first aid items, foot care stuff. I could do a pull out but I like it separated.

I don’t honestly know the weight difference but I don’t think it can be much. The biggest difference to me is cost. Those things are $20-30 so 2-3x the cost of a pull out.

I am a user of organizer bags. I used to use Kifaru pullouts but with only one color option I was not sure what was in each bag. I tried using a sharpie to label them but that didn’t last very long.

Then I found a three pack of eagle creek bags. They are rectangular, like my back and fit really well. The sizes are small, medium and large and come in several colors. I have an orange and a blue set.

Blue set
Small-TP, toothbrush, toothpaste
Med-beanie, neck gaitor, gloves and socks
Large-base layer top and bottom, extra t-shirt

Orange set
Small-possibles
Med-kill kit
Large-chow bag

So far I’ve been using them for the last few years and haven’t had any problems.

The cost is definitely a factor. I'll spend the money if the value is there. Just like I'll pay the cost penalty.

Thanks for the reminder about TP. I do like different colors to make it easier to find stuff. I'm sure I'll get it to where I like it through trial and error. Was just trying to speed it up.

While the pullouts are light they still weight something so my theory is keep as much like stuff together and use as few of the pullouts as possible. With the smaller Backcountry Organizer being 3 ounces I would think a couple .5 ounce pull outs would be a better option.
